Croatia stuns Germany 2-1 at Euro 2008

KLAGENFURT, Austria (AP) – Croatia stunned Germany 2-1 Thursday and took control of Group B at the European Championship by getting goals in each half from Darijo Srna and Ivica Olic.

An upset to some, a deserved victory in the eyes of most as Croatia took the game to Germany and exposed a back four highlighted by Marcell Jansen poor performance and Schweinsteiger silly yellow card. Full credit goes to Croatia in a total team effort.

Somewhere Arsène Wenger and Manuel Almunia is smiling over that second goal.

Turkey beats Switzerland 2-1 to eliminate co-hosts

BASEL, Switzerland (AP) – Arda Turan scored in injury time Wednesday to give Turkey a 2-1 win over Switzerland that eliminated the co-hosts from the European Championship.

The heartbreak continues for the Swiss side as Turkey came from 1 behind at half time to win 2-1 on an extra time Arda Turan goal. Full credit to Turkish manager Fatih Terim who made all the right moves at half time.

Ronaldo scores to help Portugal to 3-1 win over Czechs

GENEVA (AP) – Cristiano Ronaldo scored one goal and set up another Wednesday to help Portugal to a 3-1 win over the Czech Republic at the European Championship.

In a game that was much closer than it appear Portugal walked away with a hard fought victory over the Czech Republic. The difference has to be Deco and Cristiano Ronaldo who kept pushing forward and finally got the break through which should be good enough to see Portugal through the Knockout rounds.

Ibrahimovic scores as Sweden beats Greece 2-0

SALZBURG, Austria (AP) – Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored his first international goal in almost three years Tuesday to lead Sweden to a 2-0 win over defending champion Greece at the European Championship.

The clock may of struck midnight for Greece at Euro 2008. Both teams weren’t given the other an inch but at the end of the day a moment of brilliance by Zlatan Ibrahimovic gives Sweden the three points. Mention should be made about Freddie Lundberg who turned back the clock to his Arsenal with an impressive performance.

Villa scores hat trick, Spain thumps Russia 4-1

INNSBRUCK, Austria (AP) – David Villa scored a hat trick Tuesday to give Spain a 4-1 win over Russia, confirming it as one of the favorites at the European Championship.

Who needs Raul anyone when you have David Villa scoring a hat trick. While Villa will walk away with the headlines Fernando Torres should be given credit for the hustle he shown in setting up Villa on Spain first goal. This game was a tale of boys to men out there as Spain seemingly could of exposed the Russia back four at will. Another example in this tournament where the haves meet the have not’s as most of the games so far have been one sided.

BERN, Switzerland (AP) – The Netherlands stunned Italy 3-0 in their European Championship opener Monday, leaving the World Cup champions fighting to avoid elimination from the first round.

Would never figure Id be typing that scoreline. I can not recall another game in my lifetime that Italy played so poorly. Full credit to Holland as they had all the answers and Italy couldn’t counter that. The defending World Cup Champions looked old and slow in one game. Someone page Mr Lippi.

France 0-0 Romania: Bore draw in Zurich

France did their chances of advancing from a tough Group C no favours when they drew 0-0 with Romania in a tight, tactical affair in their opening match at Euro 2008 on Monday.

I wish I’m able to gain back those two hours I’ve spent watching this game. Romania should be happy with the result but France just leaves me shaking my head. With all that talent on display why do France play like Rangers in the UEFA Cup?

After the first two days of Euro 2008 all the results have gone according to form with Germany’s 2-0 win against Poland. Germany looked comfortable the entire game where as Poland looked sloppy throughout the 90 minutes. Poland could of played for another 90 minutes without troubling the German defense.

VIENNA, Austria (AP) – Luka Modric scored from the penalty spot Sunday to give Croatia a 1-0 win over co-host Austria at the European Championship.

That was a game which didn’t go against the form book. Austria much like Switzerland on Saturday will full value for atleast a point but the ball just didn’t bounce their way. Croatia can’t take away too many positives aside from the three points. One of the things they can build on is the fact they did keep a clean sheet. In a game that feature much in the way of one way traffic Croatia handled the pressure and kept their defensive shape.

- Finally I see a World Class Performance from a World Class team. Not a perfect 90 minutes but a great display none-the-less.

- If someone on Portugal dived like Nihat and Tuncay did tonight the press would be in an uproar.

- Play Pepe up front. Great run, great finish

- Portugal full value for the win. Turkey gave it a game but unlike the first game, the cream rose to the top.

- Happy to see Raul Meireles get that tap in goal. Type of player that coaches have to love. Total team guy and a bulldog in the midfield.
