All Hail Porto

Monday, April 4th, 2011

Barcelona and that’s it. Barcelona is the only club in football right now I’d rank as a overwhelming favorite against Porto. Every other club in the world Porto can either give them a good if they can’t beat them like Real Madrid and Manchester United I’d just about say it’s 50/50 at this point. Undefeated in the league and what a way to win the league in style going into the Estádio da Luz and defeating last year’s Champions Benfica 2-1. Hopefully Porto unlike Benfica can keep the core of this team next year as it would be interesting to see what this group of players can do in the Champions League.

P.S Roberto was a signing I never liked. 7 million for a goalie Atletico Madrid needed to get rid of. Very weak on the first goal and gives up a penalty on the second goal.

Juventus have told Arsenal to forget about signing goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon in the summer. The 33-year-old Italy international has been linked with a move to the Emirates. Daily Mail

Don’t worry the second Buffon tells Arsenal what he wants in wages they would forget about it.

LA Galaxy midfielder David Beckham has admitted he can’t decide who he wants to win the Champions League quarter-final showdown between Real Madrid and Tottenham. The former England captain played for Real from 2003 to 2007 and recently trained with Spurs. Daily Mail

Not that anyone at Real Madrid cares about David Beckham but if they did wouldn’t you be annoyed at this comment. Some grand history Beckham has with Tottenham training with them for a couple of months.

Arsenal are set to make an audacious bid to sign West Ham United midfielder Scott Parker, but are only likely to be successful if the Hammers are relegated. caughtoffside.com

Because they are too cheap to do it otherwise. Then again I do believe it’s about a press linking a player with a team and nothing more.

AC Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi believes Mario Balotelli’s off-the-field “behaviour” will prevent him from putting on the Rossoneri shirt in the future. “There is a Milan style of behaviour that I don’t think is very close to that of Balotelli. Every now and then, he has a bit of a distraction,” said Berlusconi of the Manchester City striker, who is an AC Milan fan. (Press Association)

Yet Antonio Cassano is on the team.

Former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez is keen to make a Premier League return after his failed spell at Inter Milan. Daily Mail

When Mourinho says he wants to return to the Premier League it’s a front page story. Benitez on the other hand not so much. Besides whic club would he go to when you thin about it? Tottenham is Harry Redknapp takes the England job? but that isn’t happening anytime soon.

The Football Association is expected to severely reprimand Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney after the striker swore into a TV camera on completing his hat-trick against West Ham on Saturday.
Full story: Daily Telegraph

Wayne Rooney has done a lot of dumb things in his life. This is not one of them….calm down everyone.

Having just surrendered his nine-year unbeaten home record with a defeat by Sporting Gijon, Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho said that a draw with Tottenham in Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final, first leg at the Bernabeu “would not be a disaster”. the Guardian

Not a great weekend for me that’s for sure.

Fulham fans who dislike the club’s statue of pop star Michael Jackson “should go and be Chelsea fans”, according to the club’s owner Mohammed Al Fayed. Metro

What an ugly looking statue…..it looks like a grade 8 art project.

German centre-back Per Mertesacker is set to join Arsenal in the summer after the general manager of his current club Werder Bremen, Klaus Allofs, indicated the international could leave.
Full story: Metro

Considering Arsenal doesn’t deal from the top of the deck in the transfer market Per Mertesacker with all those German caps to his name isn’t a bad choice. On the flip side Werder Bremen have given up the second most goals in the Bundesliga.

Manchester United are closing in on a £25m move for England forward Ashley Young, who has rejected a £80,000 a week new deal from Aston Villa. The Sun

Despite his miss against Ghana with the way Ashely Young has played for England it’s only a matter of time before he jumps ship.

Bolton are resigned to selling £20m-rated England defender Gary Cahill in the summer with Arsenal, Tottenham, Aston Villa and clubs on the continent all interested. Daily Mirror

I’m not exactly going to shed any tears for a club who sells a defender for 20 million.

Liverpool are preparing a clear-out as the Anfield side looks to generate funds for significant signings this summer. The likes of midfielders Milan Jovanovic, Alberto Aquilani and Christian Poulsen and full-backs Philipp Degen and Paul Konchesky will all be sold. caughtoffside.com

Aquilani will get them 10 million. I’d be shocked if the other four would bring in 5 million between them.

The Merseysiders, meanwhile, will battle with Chelsea and Barcelona to sign Shakhtar Donetsk’s Brazilian midfielder Willian. Daily Mail

Shakhtar Donetsk is a very good team. I don’t see Barcelona running over them in the Champions League.

Manchester City defender Jerome Boateng is a target for German outfit Bayern Munich less than a season after arriving from Hamburg. Daily Mirror

Have no idea why Manchester City went after Boatend to start with.

Manchester United are preparing an audacious summer move for Bayern Munich playmaker Franck Ribery. caughtoffside.com

One thing is for sure Ribery will be a lot cheaper now than he was two years ago.

Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier says he has the full backing of chairman Randy Lerner – despite the club hovering one point above the Premier League’s relegation zone. The Guardian

It’s not like the Aston Villa board can throw him overboard at this point.

Real Madrid have banned Shakira’s music at the Bernabeu – because the Colombian singer’s boyfriend Gerard Pique plays for rivals Barcelona. Daily Star

Her World Cup song wasn’t that great anyway.
