Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson hopes to bolster his side’s injury-hit defence by signing Sol Campbell. The former England defender is a free agent after settling his contract dispute with Notts County, who he left a month into a five-year deal in September. Full story: Daily Mirror

Talk about making a big jump from Notts County to Manchester United. It’s a no lose situation for United who get to sign Campbell as cover for 18 months and in turn get a player who has lost many steps but still a player who is used to playing in big games.

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is ready to part with defender Anton Ferdinand in his bid to acquire Tottenham full-back Alan Hutton. The Sun

If only wants between his ears matches up with his fame. No denying Ferdinand is built to be a class Premier League defender but always seems a step behind out there.

Everton hope to secure a loan deal for Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder Landon Donovan in the new year. The Guardian

Good to see Everton prepare for the annual Tim Cahill injury in advance. Just don’t have Donovan take penalties in important spots and he’ll be fine.

Tottenham striker Roman Pavlyuchenko is being targeted by Spurs’ north London rivals Arsenal, according to the Russian’s agent Oleg Artemov. (Daily Express)

Tottenham is not going to sell Pavlyuchenko to Arsenal and have it come back to haunt them every year.

Midfielder Luca Modric could be on the substitutes’ bench for Tottenham’s home game against Wolves on Saturday after recovering from a broken leg and playing 70 minutes of a training-ground friendly against non-League Grays. The Sun

Tottenham got out of the blocks quick to start the season thanks for Modric. Would be good to see him back in action before the year’s end.

Manchester City could make a £12m bid for Bayern Munich defender Philipp Lahm in January. The Sun

It would be a smart target for Manchester City to go after considering Lahm has been moaning in recent weeks. Manchester City should hope Bayern Munich fails to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League as it would increase the chances Bayern would sell.

Aston Villa striker John Carew is a £5m target for Turkish giants Fenerbahce. Daily Mirror

Don’t see any need or reason as to why Martin O’Neil would want to sell John Carew.

West Ham boss Gianfranco Zola is planning to make a move for former Inter Milan striker Adriano, who is available on a free transfer from Brazilian side Flamengo. The Sun

The pub owners in London would approve of this move.

Tottenham’s out-of-favour striker Robbie Keane is a loan target for Celtic. Daily Mirror

Tottenham isn’t going to let Robbie Keane leave mid season. At this time last year saw injuries hit the Tottenham front line hard which is the reason they brought Keane in the first place.

Barcelona winger Jeffren Suarez, who was once a target for Arsenal, has been offered to Wigan, Blackburn and Everton. (Daily Mirror)

In other words Jeffren Suarez isn’t very good.

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti says it is his midfield, and not goalkeeper Petr Cech, that is to blame for the defeat at Manchester City. The Guardian

That wall was pretty weak. No way that ball should of found a way through.

Arsenal have ruled out a January move for Real Madrid’s Ruud van Nistelrooy. Robin van Persie, Nicklas Bendtner and Eduardo are all injured and Gunners manager Arsene Wenger has said that although he needs a striker, it won’t be the former Manchester United star. Daily Mirror

Ruud can Nistelrooy would get hurt by the second game anyway. For a team lacking depth up front due to injuries it wouldn’t be wise to bring in another injury prone striker into the fold.

Wenger could move for Barcelona striker Bojan Krkic with the young Spain international struggling to make the first team at the Nou Camp. Daily Star

Let the Krkic plus cash for Fabregas starting flying.

Stoke City striker James Beattie was involved in a bust-up with manager Tony Pulis at Arsenal over the weekend following an argument about the players’ Christmas party. After their 2-0 loss to the Londoners, it is reported the row started in the dressing room at the Emirates Stadium when the team were told they would have to train on Monday and not have the day off. Daily Mail

Ladies and gentleman please welcome Tuncay as Stoke’s new starting striker.

Wayne Rooney has revealed he missed the World Cup draw! England’s top striker was busy catching up on some rest following the birth of his son in November. “I laid down on my bed to watch the draw on TV and fell asleep,” said the 24-year-old. The Sun

Shame he missed Charlize Theron.

Interesting to see England is already in their World Cup form when it comes to taking penalty kicks.

- Credit to Avram Grant who somehow got these Portsmouth players to put in a performance after many of them haven’t been paid. Burnley are a much different team on the road than they are at home but it still says a lot for the character of these Portsmouth players to keep a clear sheet and earn the three points in such a situation.

- What is there to say about Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Stoke? Every time I start thinking this Arsenal team may be onto something they lose. Yeah it was a case of job well done but I’ll only start caring when they do it in the business end of the season against a top team.

– Coaches usually view the coach of the month award as the curse of death but Jimmy Bullard might be thinking the same about the player of the month award. Just after being awarded the honour for November Bullard had to hobble off in tears after suffering another knee injury.

- Aston Villa is in a perfect spot right now. They don’t have to deal with the press/pressure of people tipping them to break the top four as that honour goes to Tottenham and Manchester City but on the flip side they can draw from last year’s experience on how to push on for an entire year in order to break through the glass ceiling of English football.

- Perfect game for Sam Allardyce to come back too as there wasn’t a moment of excitement for his repaired heart to deal it.

- Allardyce must be over the moon with the past week for Blackburn, advancing in the Carling Cup and then drawing against Liverpool in the league.

- Liverpool is in the same spot Arsenal were last year with everyone pegging them to drop out of the top four. Much like Arsenal rounding into form during the second half of the season I’d lean to Liverpool doing the same but I wouldn’t be putting any money on it.

- Those West Ham players should have a long look at themselves. It’s one thing to be favored to lose; it’s another to hang your head low and let Manchester United walk all over them after Darren Gibson’s second goal. They laid down in front of the home fans, have some pride for crying out loud.

- Every time I start to write off Paul Scholes he seems to come up with something from the top drawer to remind everyone what type of talent he has.

- Was thinking to myself a couple of days ago about just what type of player Darren Gibson could be. Kept thinking on the low end he should be no worse than Michael Carrick who is a fine player in his own right and on the high end a Frank Lampard type player. It should fall somewhere in the middle and if so Manchester United would be quite pleased considering the likes of Carrick and Anderson cost them 20 million pounds each.

- One of the cool things about having a site for close to two years is the fact I can go back and see what I’ve said about certain players.

Regarding Darren Gibson

On June 4th 2009

Manchester United trio Fraizer Campbell, Danny Simpson and Darron Gibson have been placed on the transfer list at Old Trafford. (Daily Mirror)

For the best as Campbell and Simpson are way back in the depth chart. In the right team United might end up regretting selling Gibson in a couple of years.

Link

and on May 25th

- Darren Gibson’s strike was a goal even Paul Scholes could be proud of. With more playing time teams will quickly learn to close down Gibson or risk more goals like yesterday’s.

Link

- By the way yes I know I’m sure the search feature could also produce many dumb things I’ve said over time.

- Birmingham city fans must love the start to the season. After coming back to defeat Wigan 3-2 they sit at 21 points over 15 games. They are already half way to the magical 40 point mark which usually means safety.

- Calls for Gary Megson head should start growing louder after dropping to 19th on the table losing to a struggling Wolves side 2-1.

- Speaking of Wolves what an important win for Mick McCarthy who were briefly at the bottom of the table thanks to Portsmouth win earlier. Wolves are still in the drop zone but it’s a big difference being one point away from safety than four.

- Job well done Manchester City, they didn’t let Chelsea early goal let them down and get taking the game them. Chelsea on the other hand looked like a team off its game. Even when Manchester tied it up Chelsea could never seem to find that extra gear.

- Ricardo Carvalho you know I think the world of you but please don’t foul anyone like to did to Tevez next summer.

- Petr Cech you should have learned from Manuel Almunia mistake last week guessing on a free kick. Credit for Carlos Tevez still for getting it through a tight spot so close to goal.

- I know it’s easy to say now but had a feeling Frank Lampard was going to miss. He’d been ineffective the entire game and even his run up for the penalty kick was timid. At no point did he seem confident out there.

- Bobby Zamora for England before Trinidad & Tobago snaps him up. Without their best striker in Andrew Johnson, Fulham is still fighting it out just outside a European place.

- And no I’m not serious with that Bobby Zamora comment.

- What a game between Tottenham and Everton! The first half was filled with hard tackles and chipy play. In the second half once Michael Dawson made it two goals in two weeks you figured job done for Tottenham but to Everton’s credit they fought back and earned a draw but to them it must be a win. Louis Saha comes on and scores with an eye for goal Jo could only dream he had then Tim Cahill got to box with the sticks when he tied it up.

Then drama as Tony Hibbert goes for the man after being beaten to the ball by Wilson Palacios. Penalty corrected awarded but Jermain Defoe kicks it straight where Tim Howard is able to get a leg on it to save a point.

- Lessoned learned from this game:

a) Tottenham, learn to play 90 minutes. Everyone on that team must know they let Everton off the hook.

b) Wilson Palacios, smooth move laying around like you’ve been shot out then and icing Jermain Defoe.

c) Forget about these Jack Rodwell to Manchester United, Chelsea or even Real Madrid rumours how about the game right back Séamus Coleman had? His performance is what turned the game around for Everton.

Rogers Sportsnet Acquires EPL Rights Starting In 2010

(If your not Canadian this post will mean nothing to you.)

Happy days for me. I try not to repeat myself here, not trying to sound like a broken record but I’ve posted twice how bush league thescore’s EPL coverage was from day one sub leasing the rights to Rogers/Setanta Canada leaving people without EPL as Setanta Canada wasn’t rolled out nation wide yet.

With that happy to announce Rogers Sportsnet has shown a commitment to soccer by reacquiring the rights to EPL in Canada to go along with having Champions League rights. The contract is for three years with hopefully more games in HD. It makes me wonder why Sportsnet lost the EPL rights to begin with back in 2007. Somebody dropped the ball there.

Advice for thescore, if they were smart and so far they have shown otherwise they would acquire La Liga rights once the rights come on the market. Oh and try to get likable studio guys.

I wrote this on other site on Aug 17th 2009 since I figured many here don’t care as most of you aren’t Canadian but I’ll copy and paste it below.

- New season and I’m already counting down the days hoping and praying the score loses the EPL rights for next season. Let’s get the good out of the way, It’s great they show games in HD. Football as most well know simply stunning in HD.

After a summer largely ignoring the footy show I figured I’d be able to stomach James Sharman again but no I simply can not stand the man on TV.

Notice I say the man on TV and not on real life. He may be the nicest guy in real life going off with Rod Beck to help sick kids in Africa while filming it so they can ask me for money but on TV he just comes off as a prick. I’d be shocked if he didn’t have his chin up all the time.

Loved his reaction to when the somebody in the score chatroom made fun of him for wearing a black shirt, black pants and white sneakers (it was foolish). The only comeback he could make was since the chatroom kid was a Man Utd fan Sharman tries his 10583th dig at Ronaldo over wearing tight pink shorts (he did forget the equally gay flower in his ear) like one has anything to do with another?

Does this incident alone make me dislike the guy? Of course not it’s just one little thing in a series of little things that do. He simply seems like the type of kid you grew up with that would take his ball and go home if he didn’t get his way.

World Cup Groups Announced

worldcup

You just can’t tell me the World Cup draw isn’t rigged but I’ll leave that to Oliver Stone to make a movie of one day.

I should be upset Portugal got paired in the “Group of Death” but I’m not. Two months ago Portugal didn’t have control of their World Cup hopes so everything now is a free roll and you know what as Ric Flair says to be the best you got to best the best. Besides it isn’t like Brazil and the Ivory Coast are happy about being paired with Portugal either. North Korea will most likely find out about the draw once the first TV’s are shipped to that country sometime in the new year.

Portugal struggles against teams they deem lesser to them like the U.S in World Cup 2002 and Greece back in 2004 plus the last time Portugal was in a “group of death was in Euro 2000″ when their were paired with England, Germany, Romania and rolled over each team. With Portugal being paired with Brazil and North Korea stories of 1966 will start flowing as we took both countries out of that World Cup.

Trip down memory lane.

Portugal vs Brazil

Portugal vs North Korea where after down 3-0 the great Eusebio scores four to end up winning the game 5-3

The other thing which struck me from this draw is the top countries either have it really easy or really hard in the first round. The only group which shows some balance is Group B with Argentina, Nigeria, South Korea, and Greece. Argentina may be the favorites but any of the other three teams can advance.

The likes of England, U.S.A, Italy and Spain have all been given cup cake draws.

Already looking forward to the “Experts” predicting Brazil and the Ivory Coast advancing cause of Portugal struggles in qualifying.

Group A
South Africa
Mexico
Uruguay
France

Group B
Argentina
Nigeria
South Korea
Greece

Group C
England
United States

Slovenia

Group D

Denmark
Japan
Cameroon

Group F

Group G

Not much going on heading into today’s all important World Cup draw.

Chelsea are battling it out with Arsenal for Inter Milan’s £18m-rated striker Mario Balotelli. Daily Mail

Don’t care how much money the press quote just can’t see Inter giving up on Mario Balotelli. Despite being young and dumb still he as a world of talent.

Chelsea have also been linked with a £13.5m move for Santos striker Neymar. (Daily Mail)

Wonder if Carlo Ancelotti would get confused and start calling Neymar, Pato.

Burnley want on-loan striker David Nugent to join on loan from Portsmouth on a permanent basis. The Times

Considering David Nugent would at least be paid at Burnley I’m sure he’ll jump at the chance to sign on a permanent basis.

Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez has hit out at the lack of loyalty shown to him by fans at his former club, Manchester United. The Sun

Can’t frankly what did he expect after whining on the way out. It’s thanks for the service but now your the enemy as far as Manchester United fans are concerned.

tottenham

Tottenham look set to agree the £7m signing of Internacional’s Brazilian midfielder Sandro on Sunday.
Full story: Daily Mirror

This would be an interesting signing as Tottenham don’t exactly have a rich history of plucking players from Brazil.

Manchester United are considering a January transfer move for Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko.
Full story: Daily Mirror

But Arsenal are also interested in the £15m-rated Bosnia striker as they look to replace injured forward Robin Van Persie. The Sun

So much for the Michael Owen signing working out for Manchester United. It’s not set in stone Manchester United will bring another striker but if they do it sends a pretty signal too Michael Owen.

United will sell Serbian winger Zoran Tosic and pass up on their option to sign his former team-mate Partizan Belgrade midfielder Adem Ljajic in order to free up funds to sign Dzeko. Daily Mirror

Or, United’s decision to pull out of the £10m deal for Serbian ‘superkid’ Ljajic is because there are suggestions the Old Trafford club are suffering from a financial crisis. Daily Star

Not an United bean counter so no clue as to their financial health but poor Adem Ljajic. This move must be really disappointing for the kid. It’s kinda like going out with Megan Fox and having her break up with you right before you plan on taking her home.

Meanwhile, United keeper Ben Foster will be sent out on loan in January in a bid to secure his place in England’s World Cup squad. Daily Mirror

Or Foster will be sent on loan since he didn’t set the world on fire at the start of the season.

United will also listen to offers of around £10m for Portugal winger Nani who has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford. The Sun

The price is right as there is a buy low and end up selling high potential with Nani.
