Manchester City’s Nigel de Jong has pulled out of the Dutch squad for their friendly against Australia in Sydney on Saturday after limping out of City’s draw with Aston Villa on Monday (Press Association, 1045 BST).

With the Dutch having qualified for the World Cup I’m sure they won’t be hit too hard but the absent of Nigel de Jong.

Former Chelsea and Liverpool player Boudewijn Zenden, 33, is to spend a week on trial with Sunderland, says his father and agent Pierre (Press Association, 1040 BST).

Zenden won’t hurt Sunderland but it’s unlikely he’ll be much of a help on the pitch either.

Chelsea could move for Patrick Vieira as cover for Michael Essien and John Obi Mikel when they are away on African Cup of Nations duty in January – if the club can challenge its transfer ban The Sun

All of this because Vieira went to watch Chelsea’s game vs Liverpool on the weekend.

Fulham are interested in American striker Brek Shea, who plays for FC Dallas : The Sun

You would think after spending close to five million on Eddie Johnston they would be hesitant on purchasing another player from MLS. Then again Client Dempsey has been a hit since buying him from New England in 2007.

Liverpool co-owner George Gillett has told a fans’ meeting manager Rafa Benitez is to blame for their faltering progress, not the club’s owners : The Guardian

Not the smartest thing to say but not incorrect either. It’s not like Manchester United, Chelsea or Arsenal have spent big this summer.

Cesc Fabregas says he has no intention of leaving Arsenal, despite continued rumours linking him with Barcelona. The Sun

Almost feel sorry for Fabregas. Everytime the player opens his mouth the press then links him away from Arsenal. Last week Fabregas said he liked watching Italian football so naturally the press put 2 and 2 together and linked him with a move to Italy.

Aston Villa, Hull and Wolves are all keen to sign Sol Campbell – if his bid to overturn rules preventing him from joining another club before January is successful. Daily Mail

No idea how the FA will come down regarding Sol Campbell but considering the Notts County move was dumb from day one maybe they will take pity on Campbell and allow him to join another club A.S.A.P.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson can expect a lengthy touchline ban after he questioned the fitness of referee Alan Wiley following Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Sunderland. Daily Mail

Manchester United’s next match is at home against Bolton. I’d want to skip that much too if I could.

Aston Villa midfielder James Milner has called on his club’s supporters not to target abuse at former Villa star Gareth Barry, who returns with Manchester City on Monday. The Guardian

Can’t see it happening. Maybe after this game they will let up on Barry but in his first game back at Villa park I have a feeling they are going to vent their displeasure over his departure.

Barcelona midfielder Xavi has hit out at opposing sides for being “boring” in the defensive tactics they employ.

Xavi was upset as opponents Almeria parked the proverbial bus at the weekend, adding: “I have never been marked like that. It was obsessive.” Daily Star

Xavi played Chelsea twice last season and Inter Milan in the Champions League this year. Of course Xavi’s been marked like that before.

European Football Roundup

- Most people will focus on what is wrong with Real Madrid after losing 2-1 to Sevilla but give credit where it’s due as Sevilla where the better team out there. The opening games set up nicely for Real Madrid but against a top team who always seems to play well at home their weaknesses were exposed.

- Cristiano Ronaldo may not be the best player in the world but he is the most important player for Real Madrid already. Much like his time with Manchester United when Ronaldo is not in the starting lineup Real Madrid loses a certain spark out there.

- Barcelona may spend big when it comes to filling a need like Dani Alves last year and Zlatan Ibrahimovic this year but the heart and soul of this team is there youth pipeline. For the last two seasons people have been anointing Bojan as the next great player but with his injury Pedro has stepped up and shown Pep Guardiola that he deserves a place on this team.

- The sky is no longer falling for Inter Milan. Even better news sees Inter in a tie for top spot in Serie A thanks to Sampdoria’s draw with Parma and Juventus losing to Palermo. Wesley Sneijder goal at the death from a tight angle sees Mourinho all smiles going into the international break. Mind you I’m sure the special one will find something to annoy him during the time off.

- I’m interested to see how Ciro Ferrara handles Juventus downturn after being the darling of Italian football in September. If he comes through this rough patch well he should have a long career in coaching.

- It’s almost sad to see AC Milan being happy drawing against Atalanta considering they are 19th in the table. Nice to see Ronaldinho score however it took 43 minutes being up a man for A.C Milan to get the equalizer.

- Roberto Donadoni must be feeling the heat going into the break in 15th spot. Losing 2-1 against Roma thanks to a brace from Francesco Totti isn’t going to make things any better.

- The last time Bayern Munich where in a slump they were able to purchase Arjen Robben. No such luck now as Bayern produced another disappointing performance, drawing FC Koln 0-0.

- With Bayern Munich failing to score it makes the decision to send Toni Kroos out on loan to Bayer Leverkusen even more puzzling. Not only is Bayer Leverkusen joint leaders on top of the Bundesliga along with Hamburg but the 19 year old is producing fine goals like the one against Nurnberg on the weekend. While he hasn’t featured for the German national team yet he is exactly the type of under the radar type player who might shine at next year’s World Cup.

- I know 99% of you don’t care about Portuguese football but since I’ve mentioned Braga’s perfect start they just kept on winning. I’m not about to break the streak now. Make 7 for 7 as Braga defeated Jose Mourinho home town club Vitoria Setubal 2-0. Former Newcastle man Hugo Viana got the FU goal in the 93rd minute.

- Finally a Freddy Adu sighting as he played 30 minutes in Belenenses 0-0 draw against Sporting. That should help out his parent club Benfica who play Monday.

- Not shocked by Rangers defeating Celtic 2-1 in the latest Old Firm derby. Ranger were a desperate team and played like one as they didn’t want to drop seven points behind Celtic. Kenny Miller will never completely win over the Rangers faithfully but after his two goal performance it’s unlikely he’ll have to pick up a tab for a week or two.

Lippi Announces Latest Italian Squad

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

italy_logo

Marcello Lippi can’t speak English but he if did I’m sure he would say Antonio Cassano doesn’t fit into his plans at the moment. No matter how many goals Cassano is scoring this season, Lippi is going with the players who have lead Italy to the brink of World Cup qualification.

GOALKEEPERS: Gigi Buffon (Juventus), Morgan De Sanctis (Napoli) & Federico Marchetti (Cagliari)

DEFENDERS: Fabio Cannavaro (Juventus), Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus), Salvatore Bocchetti (Genoa), Alessandro Gamberini (Fiorentina), Fabio Grosso (Juventus), Nicola Legrottaglie (Juventus), Davide Santon (Inter) & Gianluca Zambrotta (Milan)

MIDFIELDERS: Mauro German Camoranesi (Juventus), Gaetano D’Agostino (Udinese), Daniele De Rossi (Roma), Rino Gattuso (Milan), Claudio Marchisio (Juventus), Angelo Palombo (Sampdoria), Simone Pepe (Udinese) & Andrea Pirlo (Milan)

FORWARDS: Antonio Di Natale (Udinese), Alberto Gilardino (Fiorentina), Vincenzo Iaquinta (Juventus), Fabio Quagliarella (Napoli) & Giuseppe Rossi (Villarreal).

EPL Week In Review October 4th

epl

- In general I have nothing but respect for Manchester United but can easily understand why people loathe them. It’s seems every late game heroics go United way even when they aren’t scoring the themselves. You have former United player Kieran Richardson picking up a silly second yellow card. Sure the second one was cheap but when you are on a card it’s idiotic to even risk a card in that spot by kicking the ball away. Once that occurred you pretty much knew it was only a matter of time before the second and maybe even the third goal was bound to happen. No Michael Owen, no problem as Rio’s younger brother Anton Ferdinand own goal gave United a split of the points.

- Football is a cruel game sometimes but Ferdinand’s own goal isn’t going to endear himself to Steve Bruce going forward. Wouldn’t shock me to hear more transfer rumours this week.

– No failure in Dimitar Berbatov beautiful goal against Sunderland. That’s Berbatov in a nutshell and the reason Sir Alex Ferguson shelled out the money for him. He has these moments with the football no other striker can produce. The downside is Berbatov has been unable to carry that form game in and game out during an entire season.

- At the start of the season mentioned how there isn’t a strike force outside of the big four I’d trade Darren Bent and Kenwyne Jones for. May have to change that despite the six Arsenal put by Blackburn I’d take Bent and Jones over any two strikers Arsenal can muster up. When you consider age I’d also take Bent and Jones right now to Drogba and Anelka.

– Steve Bruce must be very happy at the moment. It’s not the end of the season so Bruce didn’t gift wrap the three points for United but the reality of it is Sunderland can walk away from Saturday’s game knowing they were the best team out there on the pitch. How many teams can say that against Manchester United?

- Sir Alex Frerguson never misses a trick. Love how he blasted referee’s Alan Wiley performance out there to take the focus off his own team’s display. His line about how European referee’s being fit like a butchers dog cracked me up as he compared them to some unfit Englsh referee’s such as Wiley.

- Gary Megson said it best yesterday in his post match interview saying he has never been happier with his team and also never been more annoyed with them. Going into the game if you told the Bolton they would draw against Tottenham I’m sure they would take it but being up twice only to give the lead back is a tough pill to take against a Tottenham team there for the taking.

– What is with the rumours of Harry Redknapp leaving the club after his odds were slashed by the bookies to be the next one to go? I’m sure there is more to the story but considering all the time they gave to Juande Ramos the Tottenham board should just shut up and let Redknapp go about his job.

- It’s rarely mentioned but just how much do Tottenham miss Luka Modric right now? Their cooling off isn’t a coincidence. With Modric out other teams can now put the bull’s eye on Aaron Lennon.

- Burnley must of read the blue print Stoke City laid out of them last year. Win at home and hope for the best on the road but most important is winning at home and Burnley with four wins this season sees them comfortably in 9th this season.

– Nice to see Steven Fletcher get off the mark for Burnley yesterday against Birmingham City. Fletcher was easily the best Scottish player who played outside of Celtic and Rangers last year. Good to see him step up in leagues and chip in a goal.

- Remember you shouldn’t gamble but if you do please never take into account what happened last week as a reason to bet something to happen this week. After beating Chelsea last week you’d think Wigan would be ready for Hull City but you’d be wrong. Phil Brown must be sleeping better going into the international break with a win.

– Congrats to Portsmouth and Paul Hart who have finally won a game beating Wolves 1-0. Even with the chaos at the board level Hart would most likely been canned with they went into the break 0-8. Good for Portsmouth who played a good game against Everton last week and were unlucky to come away with nothing. They got an early goal thanks to Hassan Yebda who is currently on loan from Benfica and with some quality saves from David James held on to earn their first win.

– Did you know Portsmouth have more points at this stage (Three) than Tottenham had after eight games last seson (Two)? Oh you did? Nevermind then.

– Way to make a good first impression Kagisho Dikgacoi. Getting a straight card card in your first game for Fulham will not endear you to their fans.

– West Ham giving up two goals while up a man will not endear themselves to the West Ham fans as well. West Ham will take the point but they may rue dropping those two points if they keep up this bottom of the table form.

- Thierry Henry picked a good game to visit his old Arsenal mates. Two weeks ago I wasn’t that impressed with Arsenal performance against Wigan but will tip my cap to them this week even if I now have to deal with Wenger making up words to describe the quality of Arsenal football. Blackburn have always had a knack of playing Arsenal tough and it started out no difference with the visitors racing out to a 1-0 and then 2-1 lead. Then Arsenal took over and what I do like about Arsenal is when they smell blood they don’t let up. After Arsenal scored the 4th goal Blackburn pretty much waived the white flag but Arsenal kept on taking the game to them adding an extra two FU goals to make it 6-2. Paul Robinson won’t find this funny but it could of been even worst if he didn’t make some fine saves between the pipes.

- Happy 13th anniversary in English football to Arsene Wenger. Despite the man annoying me to no end at times, English football wouldn’t be where it is today if it wasn’t for him taking on Manchester United.

- Liverpool was in a bad spot facing Chelsea on the road but you can tell their loss to Fiorentina really shock them up. They played like a team afraid to lose instead of a team wanting to win. Aside from a few spurts here or there Liverpool played like a timid team. Rafa is going to love this international break as the hope is these Liverpool players will put this week behind them when they come back from international duty.

- What a performance by Drogba yesterday. Despite not getting on the scoresheet he was bossing the game when not rolling around on the floor. His cross to Anelka was picture perfect and the way he shrugged off Jamie Carragher for Chelsea second goal to put it out of reach was just the icing on the cake.

- He didn’t have to do a lot but just how important is Hilário to this Chelsea team? In each of the last four years Hilário has been put in a tough spot and come through just fine. Those Chelsea players must love the fact Hilário won’t make many mistakes back there if Cech isn’t able to start.

- Have a feeling Manchester City won’t have it as easy this Monday as they did last Monday against West Ham. Should be interesting to see how Gareth Barry will be welcomed in his first game back at Villa Park

Credit to Grant Wahl of SI who twitted this yesterday but the link below details a team by team breakdown of MLS Salaries. Some salaries which caught my eye were Houston’s Stuart Holden who only makes 34k a year. Talk about being due for a big raise in his next contract. Toronto FC’s Gabe Gala who scored against Real Madrid in their friendly makes a grand total of 20k this year. Talk about playing for the love of the game.

Portugal Announce Squad for World Cup Qualifiers

Interesting how Paulo Ferreira and Cesar Peixoto made the cut considering they are not regulars for their club teams. Actually do like Peixoto, Ferreira not so much. The starting lineup however is pretty much everyone you would except. Now beat Hungary October 10, 2009 and repeat that form October 14, 2009 against Malta. Will now light a candle and hope Denmark can do their good European friends a favour against Sweden.

Goaltenders: Eduardo (Braga), Beto (FC Porto), Rui Patricio (Sporting)

Defenders: Pepe (Real Madrid), Bosingwa (Chelsea), Paulo Ferreira (Chelsea), Ricardo Carvalho (Chelsea), Bruno Alves (FC Porto), Rolando (FC Porto), Cesar Peixoto (Benfica)

Midfielders: Deco (Chelsea), Tiago (Juventus), Raul Meireles (FC Porto), Veloso (Sporting), Joao Moutinho (Sporting), Nuno Assis (Guimaraes), Duda (Malaga)

Forwards: C. Ronaldo (Real Madrid), Nani (Man United), Liedson (Sporting), Nuno Gomes (Benfica), Simao (A. Madrid)

Bayern Munich Winger Arjen Robben Sidelined For A Month

The Dutchman has sustained a knee injury that will require surgery, though his problem is not as serious as first feared…

Bayern Munich coach Louis van Gaal will be without Dutch forward Arjen Robben for around a month due to a knee injury.

Article

Somewhere Real Madrid and Chelsea are going I told you so. Could only imagine the injury’s Robben will have the closer he turns to 30. Speaking of age doesn’t Robben look like the world’s oldest 25 year old. When I first saw him remember going online to verify his real age cause I was in disbelief.

Vieira issues Inter quit threat

Patrick Vieira has revealed his frustration at becoming a bit-part player at Inter Milan and threatened to quit the San Siro if he is not given more playing time by boss Jose Mourinho.

Vieira has been at the San Siro since 2006 but has found himself a bit part player of late behind Dejan Stankovic, Esteban Cambiasso, Javier Zanetti and Sulley Muntari in the pecking order.

Article

Inter Milan couldn’t give Vieira away this summer. If Vieira wants to leave he’ll have to take a step down in clubs much like Claude Makelele did going to PSG. A move to France wouldn’t hurt Vieira’s World Cup hopes either.

Manchester United and Real Madrid are both keen on Fiorentina striker Stevan Jovetic, who scored twice against Liverpool in the Champions League this week, but the Italian side are set to offer the Montenegro star a new five-year contract. (The Sun)

Jovetic would be best suited staying where he is. It’s only been a couple of games where he has grown into his potential. Still needs another season before thinking about making the next step up. Then again money talks.

Bolton boss Gary Megson insists defender Gary Cahill will not leave the Reebok Stadium in the January transfer window despite interest from Manchester United and Tottenham. The Sun

Could also mean he could leave in the summer if a club wrote a Michael Turner 12 million pound like cheque. Selling your best defender in the January transfer window is asking for trouble when your a team always on the bubble like Bolton.

Former Everton and Manchester City left-back Michael Ball has turned down a three-year deal at Notts County and could join Portsmouth or Turkish giants Galatasaray. The Sun

Don’t understand why Ball hasn’t packed up his bags for Turkey. A member of my All England, All Turd team of the decade the one cap English international should jump at the chance to play for a club like Galatasaray.

Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie has secured a £5m cash injection from Saudi property magnate Ali Al-Faraj that will allow the Fratton Park side to pay their players. Storrie and Al-Faraj were part of a rival consortium that lost out to Sulaiman Al Fahim for control of the club. Daily Mail

Storrie must really love Portsmouth to get through all this hassle to keep them afloat. Shame he didn’t get control of the team.

Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov admits he has been a failure at Old Trafford since his £30.75m move from Tottenham in August 2008 and says his poor form caused him sleepless nights. The Sun

Wouldn’t say failure. Disappointment is more the right word. It’s not his fault Manchester United had to pay over the market rate in order for Tottenham to sell him.

Liverpool forward Ryan Babel says being dropped by the Netherlands ahead of next summer’s World Cup finals has scared him into trying to salvage his Anfield career. The 22-year-old has struggled since joining the Reds for £11.5m from Ajax in 2007. Daily Mail

Babel should of read the tea leaves and asked to left the club this summer. He just isn’t the right fit for the way Liverpool play.

Former Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari is facing the sack at Uzbekistan side Bunyodkor after they were knocked out of the Asian Champions League. The Brazilian, who is the highest paid manager in the world on £12.5m a year, will get a huge compensation package if he is forced out. The Independent

Well he didn’t go to Uzbekistan for the culture. For that amount of change I’d pack my bags too.

Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner claims only divine intervention saved his life when he crashed his car on his way to training on Sunday. The Danish star says it is a “miracle” that he is still alive, but hopes to face Blackburn this weekend. Daily Mirror

He better be fit to face Sweden in two weeks.
