EPL Week In Review September 27th

epl

- You would think going into the weekend the big four were given a break in the fixture list ahead of the Champions League games mid week. All four teams had winnable games but as often the case things don’t go according to plan.

- Raise your hand if you had Wigan beating Chelsea yesterday? Talk about a night and day difference from their 4-0 performance against Arsenal last week. When you include losing 5-0 to United earlier this season most would of figured more of the same against Chelsea.

- Some may pin pointed it to Petr Cech head injury by Stephen Hunt or his Euro 2008 meltdown as the start of his decline. None the less it’s been a slow decline for a goalie who once was considered the best in the world. Going into the last World Cup you would of had Buffon, Casillas and Cech in any order as the best in the world. You can’t make that argument now for Cech.

- It was bound to happen sooner or later but it will be interesting to see how Chelsea replies from this. Football is easy when everything is coming up roses. The challenge is how to reply when a team gets knocked off their perch albeit for a week like Chelsea was.

- Considering Chelsea were lucky to beat Stoke and Hull all things considered another poor result and people will start to wonder why Chelsea doesn’t put away bad teams.

- Everyone it seems is applauding Ryan Giggs as he turned the game around for Manchester United against a tough Stoke side. Giggs does what Nani fails to do and makes the game simple. Nani who to be fair should of had a goal as his strike outside the box was saved well by Thomas Sørensen but aside from that he takes three touches on the ball when only one is needed. Giggs sees the ball and passes the ball into open space. Sometimes it’s as simple as that. His pass to set up Dimitar Berbatov opening goal was just a thing of beauty.

- When rumours start becoming public that a coach is on the hot seat one of two things happen. The team either rallies around the coach and puts together a string of results. This is rare. What usually happens is the players mail it in as seen by Hull against Liverpool. The players who have already tuned out Phil Brown no longer care as they feel a new coach will be in charge soon. Geovanni scored for Hull after getting a two year contact extension mid week but it’s not like you can give all your players new contracts to improve their performances. With Michael Turner being sold Hull has left a huge void in their backline. Starting 18 year old Liam Cooper against Liverpool and really only one outcome was going to be achieved.

- Rafa Benitez is not the type of coach to do this but one can brag for along time being the one to sign Fernando Torres. Unless Liverpool goes into the tank I’d be shocked if Torres doesn’t receive the PFA player of the year at season’s end.

- A Ryan Babel sighting yesterday with his double off the bench. Will be interesting to see if Rafa will give Babel some more minutes midweek against Fiorentina since it’s unlikely Rafa will trust him to start against Chelsea next week.

- Was more impressed with Arsenal’s 1-0 win yesterday against Fulham than last weeks 4-0 win against Wigan. Fulham were a bogey team for Arsenal last year as Brede Hangeland scored the winner in that match up. Fulham was never set up to play against Arsenal. It’s not all about the 4-0 victories, sometimes you just have to grind out an ugly 1-0 victory. The three points are still the same.

- Portsmouth to be fair did seem to rally around their coach Paul Hart. Either that or they were sick of losing but it made no difference as they weren’t able to overcome Louis Saha’s lone Everton goal. Portsmouth were denied a couple of goals as balls were cleared off the line as these Portsmouth players must feel this is a nightmare that has no end in sight.

- Didn’t expect three goals in the Birmingham-Bolton game nor did I expect Bolton to get two of those goals. Gary Megson quieted his critics for one week at least by grabbing the points thanks to Chung-Yong Lee goal soon after Kevin Phillips tied it up for Birmingham.

- Sam Allardyce must be sleeping better tonight. With Aston Villa looking for their 7th win in a row you would of figured it was going to be a long night when Gabriel Agbonlahor opened the scoring three minutes in. Again an early goal turned out to be the worst thing which could happen to a club as Aston Villa took their foot off the petal and when Blackburn tied it up Villa seemed unable to find their previous form.

- Manchester City fans know about Richard Dunne’s mistakes all to well. Very good defender but too often makes decisions that leaves you shaking your head. A hand ball due to his hand being over his head to gift Blackburn a penalty isn’t something you want to see happen in the 89th minute.

- Have a feeling Robbie Keane is going to add each and every Burnley defender to his Christmas card list. As whispers were getting louder regarding Keane’s first team status scoring four goals in a game is a good way to quiet those critics.

- Hasn’t been the best of weeks for Burnley. First they lose 3-2 to Barnsley in the Carling Cup they give up five to Tottenham.

- It has been a good week for Tottenham however. After being schooled by Chelsea they reply with 5-1 and 5-0 victories over Preston and Burnley.

- Have little interest in the Sunderland-Wolves game coming up but do have an eye on the Manchester City-West Ham match on Monday. West Ham is looking for points in the worst way not winning since the opening game of the season. Manchester City will be looking to forget last weekend’s result. If they have taken a woe is me attitude this weekend it wouldn’t shock me at all to see West Ham trip up City after everything was looking so good to them two weeks ago.

Sebastian Giovinco Staying At Juventus – Alessio Secco

The Bianconeri’s director has denied that the ‘atomic ant’ will be leaving on loan in January to find more space elsewhere…

Article

Giovinco should start to see the writing on the wall by now. With Diego playing in Giovinco preferred role he’ll always be a square peg in a round hole within the Juventus formation. Come this summer Giovinco should get his agent to set the wheels in motion regarding a move to another club.

Resino Given Two Games To Secure Atletico Madrid Future – Report

Valencia and Porto ties are now make or break for Abel…

Atletico Madrid coach Abel Resino has reportedly been given two games to prove he is the man for the job at the Vicente Calderon after a miserable start to the new campaign by Los Colchoneros.

Article

Didn’t like Resino replacing former coach Javier Aguirre when it was announced and still don’t see it as a good fit for Atletico Madrid. Resino saved his job by getting Atletico into the Champions League at the end of last season but when his players openly blasted his tactics after losing to Porto in the knockout round last year knew it’s only a matter of time before they tune Resino out completely.

Premier League Teams As Countries?

David Anderson from the Daily Mirror wrote a great little piece on what if Premier League teams were countries. Some of my person favorites where……

Everton are Portugal. Once they ruled the land, but have hit hard times and are now overshadowed by an illustrious neighbour.

Arsenal and Arsene Wenger can only be France. Refined, a joy to behold and aesthetically pleasing, but show the same fight as the French did in 1940 when they travel north.

Portsmouth
are the Cook Islands, or whatever Pacific islands are most threatened by global warming. They are sinking fast, soon to disappear without trace.

Spurs are Greece. They used to be top dogs and helped make the game what it is today, but it was so long ago no-one can remember.

Valencia forward David Silva, who is reportedly being tracked by Manchester United, has no intention of leaving the Spanish club this season. (Daily Mirror)

Nor will Silva leave next season if history is any indication.

West Ham will step up their efforts to sign Bayern Munich and Italy striker Luca Toni. Daily Mirror

Currently just rotting away at Bayern Munich. Bad timing for Toni with this being a World Cup year. Would have to think if Toni wants to leave he’d prefer going back to Serie A before West Ham.

Fulham are tracking Benfica right-back Maxi Pereira, with the Uruguayan set to be out of contract next summer.
Full story: Daily Mirror

Blackburn are interested in Benfica winger Fabio Coentrao. Rovers have twice sent scouts to look at the winger this season.
Full story: Daily Mirror

The daily mirror all over Benfica news it seems. Maxi Pereira is picking a good year to have a breakout season. Then again just about everyone on Benfica is playing well. Not a chance a Fabio Coentrao will leave for the likes of Blackburn. Once a top club cuts a check for Angel Di Maria it will be Coentrao who takes his role.

Portsmouth boss Paul Hart has shrugged off suggestions that he could be in line for the sack. Daily Star

Hope Hart rents and didn’t buy on the south coast.

Liverpool are targeting their trip to Sunderland on 17 October as the game in which injured £20m midfielder Alberto Aquilani will make his debut for the club. Daily Telegraph

Looking forward to see what impact Aquilani can make with Liverpool this season. Hopefully Liverpool will still be close enough to whichever team is topping the table when he does return.

Sergio Ramos: Real Madrid & Barcelona Are Level Pegging Now

The dynamic defender has claimed that Los Blancos are now matched evenly with Barca, who won a historic treble last season.

Article

Ramos is right to believe this but the true test comes on November 29th when Real Madrid sees if they can jump over the measure stick Barcelona has set.

Newcastle face administration, loss of points

Newcastle United could be forced into administration if former boss Kevin Keegan wins a massive compensation pay-out.

Article

What a PR move this is by Newcastle in an attempt to paint Kevin Keegan as the bad guy. Hasn’t Mike Ashley done enough harm? I’d love to run a business where I could change my mind on a person and forget about any valid contracts previously in place.

Manchester United are becoming increasingly concerned by defender Rio Ferdinand’s persistent injury problems.
Full story: The Times

Ferdinand’s body has taken a beating over the years. It doesn’t shock me to see him slowly breaking down.

Bolton defender Gary Cahill is being tracked by Italian giants Juventus following a glowing reference from England boss Fabio Capello. AC Milan are also interested in the 23-year-old. Daily Mirror

Cahill has been a great buy since being signed from Aston Villa. That doesn’t mean he will be plying his trade in Italy anytime soon.

Bolton manager Gary Megson says he is not prepared to sell striker Johan Elmander, despite a disappointing record in front of goal and the arrival of loan signing from Nantes, Ivan Klasnic, this summer. The Sun

Injuries haven’t helped Johan Elmander settle into life in English football. Being a striker for a team like Bolton is tough. Elmander isn’t the type of player who can make something out of nothing. He needs to be feed the ball in dangerous positions but Bolton don’t feature attacking midfielders who can supply the ball.

Former Tottenham and Arsenal defender Sol Campbell quit Notts County because he hated his debut match against Morecambe so much. Full story: Daily Mirror

Campbell walked out of Notts County because he did not believe the promised investment from the club’s new owners would materialise. Full story: The Independent

I’d go with the first option. I’m sure culture shock set in once Campbell fully realized what he signed on for.

Hull’s Carling Cup defeat at home to Everton leaves under-pressure manager Phil Brown with only four matches to save his job. After the game against Liverpool this weekend, Hull then face fellow strugglers Wigan, Fulham and Portsmouth. The Sun

Take about going from the penthouse to the outhouse. A year ago Phil Brown could do no wrong.

Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, 38, will decide in December whether this season will be his last. Daily Mail

Why December? van der Sar may not be 100% by then. Such a decision should be made in the summer.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez faces a battle to keep pace with the biggest clubs in Europe as leaked documents reveal that his net summer spending is locked at £20m until 2014. That figure also includes wage increases. The Independent

Wonder who leaked the document? Rafa?

Portsmouth owner Sulaiman Al Fahim says the Premier League strugglers are unlikely to buy new players in the January transfer window. The Guardian

It’s not like any players of true quality would go to Portsmouth anyway.

Villarreal 0-2 Real Madrid: Cristiano Ronaldo Scores In Starring Role For Los Blancos

The Portuguese winger broke another record as Madrid maintained their 100 per cent start…

Cristiano Ronaldo is beginning to make a habit of scoring at the start of games for Real Madrid. After netting in the first minute against Xerez last weekend, the world’s most expensive footballer waited until the second minute tonight to send Los Blancos on their way to a 2-0 victory over Villarreal at El Madrigal.

Article

La Liga goalies need to start covering the short hand side as this makes two games Ronaldo slide home an early that the goalie should of stopped. Despite their awful start had a feeling Villarreal could cause a few headaches for Real Madrid but it was not to be as Manuel Pellegrini walked away with the three points thanks to his former team.

Inter 3-1 Napoli: Eto’o, Milito & Lucio Pummel Partenopei

The Nerazzurri crushed the sorry Partenopei…

Inter made it four Serie A wins on the bounce with a 3-1 victory over Napoli at San Siro, with Samuel Eto’o, Diego Milito and Lucio scoring the goals for the Nerazzurri, and Ezequiel Lavezzi replying for the Partenopei.

Article

Not often you can say Inter gave a Barcelona like performance but with their three first half goals they pretty much made the last hour academic.

Former Tottenham and Arsenal defender Sol Campbell has quit Notts County after only one game, having agreed a £40,000-a-week deal at the end of August. Daily Mail

It’s not like Sol Campbell went to Notts County for the right reasons to begin with. After playing at the highest levels of football not even the money he was making could make up for such a drop playing for a league two side.

Former Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan is on track to win his legal battle with Magpies owner Mike Ashley, which could net the ex-England boss £8m compensation. Keegan is seeking constructive dismissal after quitting his St James’ Park role a year ago.
Full story: Daily Star

I’m sure Kevin Keegan would love it if he is awarded £8m in compensation.

Everton are furious after Blackburn’s El Hadji Diouf, in an interview on Senegalese radio, claimed their fans hurled bananas at him on Sunday. Police are investigating the striker for alleged racial abuse of a ball-boy in Rovers’ 3-0 defeat. The Sun

Diouf is a mental midget. It’s one thing being dim but still performing at a high level. It’s another when you on the downhill slope of your career.

Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster may be dropped for Saturday’s match at Stoke City, with Tomas Kuszczak set to be given a starting place. (The Sun)

After years of hype, Foster may not be the next English number one so many touted him out to be.

Ronaldinho denies he wants to quit football

Ronaldinho has denied speculation that he is considering retiring from football at the end of the season.

The Brazilian star, twice winner of the FIFA World Player of the Year during his time at Barcelona, has not featured in the Rossoneri’s last two games and has yet to find the back of the net after three appearances with the Serie A giants this campaign. Spanish daily Sport carried a story that Ronaldinho was to quit the game.

Article

To me Ronaldinho retired after Barcelona won the Champions League in 2006. After his disappointing performance for Brazil in the last World Cup Ronaldinho has never been the same. He’s been at the pinnacle of world football and it doesn’t seem like aside from a few flashes here or there that Ronaldinho wants to put the effort into becoming one of the world’s elite.

Barcelona Dismiss Inter Striker Samuel Eto’o’s Claim For €3m – Report

Samuel Eto’o may well win his claim for compensation against Barca, despite the Blaugrana’s protestations…

Barcelona have dismissed a claim by Samuel Eto’o that they should pay him a percentage of the transfer fee they received from Inter, but a precedent has already been set.

The Cameroonian striker wants 15 per cent of the €20 million that the Blaugrana stated was his value when including him in a swap deal that saw Zlatan Ibrahimovic move to Camp Nou.

Article

Eto’o almost reminds me on Terrell Owens. Both of them often make headlines for things outside of the football pitch. Plus both have massive egos which need to be stroked. No clue how this will end up but I’m sure Eto’o can make due on his 10 million euro a year salary from Inter.

Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo Annoyed At Xerez Substitution

The Portuguese forward has the Pichichi in his sights…

Real Madrid winger Cristiano Ronaldo is said to have been annoyed at being substituted with ten minutes remaining in the 5-0 win over Xerez on Sunday, according to AS.

The Portugal international is reportedly targetting the Pichichi Trophy by topping the goalscorers list in his first season in the Primera Division.

Article

Manuel Pellegrini better start to get with the program before track suits start being thrown.
