Barcelona Keen On Juventus Midfielder Poulsen – Report

The Danish midfielder has become the subject of Barcelona’s interest, according to reports in Spain…

Barcelona are ready to make a shock move for Juventus midfielder Christian Poulsen, according to Sport.

The report suggests the Catalan giants are keen on Liverpool’s Javier Mascherano, but they have identified Poulsen as back-up if their plan to lure the Anfield man fails. Poulsen did not explode onto the scene in Turin following last summer’s arrival from Sevilla. He played second fiddle to Mohamed Sissoko for most of the campaign, and he filled in when the Mali international was injured.

Article

It’s always a wise move for a club to try and buy low and sell low but can’t imagine Barcelona wanting Poulsen or how he fits into the Barcelona midfield picture. If this would to happen Barcelona must of not watched many Juventus games last season.

Tottenham want to sign former Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira and have opened talks with the Inter Milan player. Spurs could capture the Frenchman on a free transfer and pay-as-you-play deal. Daily Mail

Two reasons this won’t happen. One, can’t picture Vieira ever playing for Spurs and the other is can’t see Vieira jump for joy over playing on a pay as you play type deal.

Arsenal target Marouane Chamakh has revealed he would love to join them. The Bordeaux striker, who could be a replacement for Emmanuel Adebayor, said: “Arsenal would be a dream. If they were to come calling, I would certainly give them a positive answer.” Londoneveningstandard.com

Always find it tacky when a player is publicly begging for another club to come calling for his services. It isn’t like Arsenal has even made a bid on Chamakh at this point.

Manchester City are on the brink of signing Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor for £25m and wages of £130,000 per week.

Or, the fee will be £30m and the Togo striker will pick up wages of £170,000 a week.

Wonder how Roque Santa Cruz is going to feel being a super sub if this becomes a reality?

Chelsea captain John Terry wants the club to make him the highest-paid player at Stamford Bridge if he turns his back on Manchester City. Terry has been offered £250,000 a week by the Eastlands outfit. Daily Star

Dump John Terry, sign Bruno Alves from Porto and pair him up with Carvalho. There would be no drop off with an Alves and Carvalho partnership.

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has told Reds boss Rafael Benitez that he wants to join Real Madrid – but stopped short of handing in a transfer request. (Daily Star)

After Benitez tried to pawn Alonso off to Juventus last year can Liverpool fans really blame the player if he now wants to leave for Real Madrid? When/if this happens Liverpool fans should see it as good business with the money coming in for the player.

Aston Villa are aiming to complete a £24m double move for Tottenham striker Darren Bent and Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing this week. Daily Star

Villa are also set to bid £7m to land Leeds midfielder Fabian Delph, who is also wanted by Everton. (Daily Mirror)

Looks like Villa are about to spend the Gareth Barry money and then some it appears. My question on a Darren Bent move is what happens to John Carew?

Stiliyan Petrov is the dressing room favourite to become Aston Villa skipper. Boss Martin O’Neill needs to choose a new captain following the sale of Gareth Barry and the retirement of Martin Laursen. Daily Mirror

Would be a good choice with his time at Aston Villa serving the club well plus he goes all the way back to Martin O’Neill’s Celtic days.

United teenager Macheda robbed at his house

Manchester United striker Federico Macheda was robbed in his home by two thieves who stole money and jewellery, police said on Monday.

The 17-year-old Italian was targeted at his house in Washway Road, Sale, at 3.40am on Sunday; while his friend was attacked and suffered minor head injuries during the robbery.

Article

These thieves can’t be too bright to rob a house of a player who was making about as much as you and me a couple of years ago. It’s unlikely someone is hanging out at Ronaldo pick that one for starters. With these robberies popping up every couple of months in Manchester and Liverpool shocked a player hasn’t come up to announce he was either leaving and wouldn’t sign there as a result of this.

Carlos Tevez To Manchester City

Manchester City Agree Personal Terms With Carlos Tevez The Argentine will move to Eastlands this week, pending a medical….

Article

About time is the first thing that comes to mind when it comes to the Carlos Tevez sweepstakes. Things were just a little to quiet on the Carlos Tevez front these last couple of weeks. I’m sure Manchester City fans are loving the fact they swiped Carlos Tevez from cross city rivals United as an added bonus to this news. It’s actually good to see a highly rated player stay in England for a change this summer.

Real Madrid Track Sporting’s Joao Moutinho – Report

The Portuguese youngster is reportedly on the wish-list of Manuel Pellegrini…

According to Jornal de Noticias, Joao Moutinho is high on Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini’s list of targets to reinforce los Blancos’ midfield sector, which still needs two new faces, according to the Chilean tactician.

Article

This would be great for Portuguese football but just can’t see it happening. Real Madrid rarely buys players who only have the potential to play for an elite club. The norm is to shell out big money for players who have already shown it on the highest levels something with Moutinho has yet to do.

Former Celtic striker Hartson has cancer – report

Celtic have offered their support to John Hartson following reports that the former Hoops striker is battling cancer.

The 34-year-old has been diagnosed with testicular cancer which has now spread to his brain, according to the Scottish Sun.

Article

Sad to hear this news. 34 years old is way too young to deal with just a cruel blow.

Manchester City are in talks with Arsenal over the possible signing of striker Emmanuel Adebayor. Sky Sports

I’d love for Mark Hughes or anyone really at Manchester City football club to explain what is the deal with all these strikers? The way only it makes sense for City to look at Adebayor is if there are issues trying to sign Carlos Tevez.

Chelsea will hold intensive talks with captain John Terry as they fear the centre-back is ready to quit to join Manchester City.
Daily Mirror

However, the Blues will not increase England skipper Terry’s wages in an attempt to keep him at Stamford Bridge.
Daily Mail

The only way Chelsea should sell Terry is if he publicly announces a desire to for Manchester City. This way in the PR department Chelsea doesn’t look so bad where as John Terry looks horrible. Most transfers I can understand but Terry is already one of the highest paid defenders in football so now he is just being greedy. Could also understand wanting to leave a club where a player felt he accomplished all he could but with the Champions League missing this shouldn’t be the case either. If I’m Fabio Capello I’d be rethinking John Terry as English captain right now.

Aston Villa look set to sign Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing for £12m this week, raising questions over the future of Ashley Young at Villa Park. Striker Young is wanted by Tottenham, but they could lose out to Manchester United or Chelsea. Daily Mail

Things can always change in a instant but don’t think either Chelsea or United have Ashley Young at the top of their transfer list. This time next season may be a different story however.

Villa may also be set to lose defender Zat Knight, with Wolves ready to join Bolton in a battle to sign him. Daily Mail

Losing your 3th defender is not really a lost. It’s really just a decision to cash in on Knight

Portsmouth are interested in signing Tottenham right-back Pascal Chimbonda and are ready to pay £2.5m for him. (Daily Mail)

I’m sure Portsmouth is hoping Tottenham then buys Chimbonda back in January for a higher price.

Sunderland have made an increased bid of just under £6m for Wigan midfielder Lee Catermole, having had an initial bid of £4m turned down. Daily Star

Something just doesn’t sit right when a club like Wigan lets Steve Bruce leave for Sunderland (albeit for 3 million) and Steve Bruce turns around and tries to buy one of their best young players. It isn’t like England under 21 players just grow on trees at Wigan.

Portsmouth are ready to make Paul Hart their new manager – handing him the job permanently after his stint as caretaker boss last season. (Daily Mirror)

Good to see Portsmouth finally getting around to this on the eve of training camp starting. Hart will be gone by December due to little fault of his own since the ownership picture at Portsmouth makes it hard to go out and sign players.

Manchester United have had to change their long-planned exhibition dedicated to Cristiano Ronaldo to a ‘farewell’ presentation. The ‘Best Player In The World’ display at Old Trafford went up as it was announced the winger was moving to Real Madrid. (Various)

Think the person who planned this exhibition must of been the only one inside Manchester United who didn’t know Ronaldo was leaving at the end of the season.

Mourinho Couldn’t Trust You Either

Johnson: I couldn’t trust Mourinho

England defender Glen Johnson has claimed he knew his career at former club Chelsea was over because of the breakdown of trust with then coach Jose Mourinho.

Johnson, who this week completed a £17m move from Portsmouth to Liverpool, has accused Mourinho of breaking promises when they were both at Stamford Bridge.

Article

Glen Johnson was a very different player now than he was when at Chelsea. Full credit to him for improving his game but a couple of years ago he wasn’t ready to play for a big club like Chelsea. Back then he was a player with talent who would gamble too much at the back which drives Mourinho wild. The final straw was when Johnson started opening game of the 2007-2008 season for Chelsea at right back and just got burned by Olivier Kapo leading to a Birmingham goal. This wasn’t Cristiano Ronaldo beating him on the wing and soon sealed his move back to Portsmouth.

This Week Should Be Interesting For Beckham

England midfielder David Beckham has criticised the “unprofessional” conduct of Los Angeles Galaxy team-mate Landon Donovan after the USA star publicly suggested he had shown a lack of commitment to the club and the MLS.

Beckham has returned to the Galaxy after a five-month loan at Italian giants AC Milan and is seeking showdown talks with Donovan over the comments made in his book; ‘The Beckham Experiment’.

“It’s unprofessional,” Beckham blasted on his return to the USA. “In 17 years, I have played with the biggest teams in the world and the biggest players and not once been criticised for my professionalism.”

Article

This is a result of the huge difference between football cultures in North America and in Europe. David Beckham has always kept his cards close to the vest since he knows every little thing he says is going to blow up in the media. He’d love to put Sir Alex Ferguson on blast for taking a boot to his face and playing very little during his final Manchester United days but for the most part he bite his lip publicly on the matter. Landon Donovan on the other hand comes from a world where very little of what he says ever makes it to the national media so he wasn’t prepared for his comments to take off as it is. LA Galaxy coach Bruce Arena is going to privately say good job to Landon Donovan if these comments now light a fire under Beckham the rest of this MLS season. Just think back when Ramón Calderón slagged Beckham’s move to American and in turn Beckham helped Real Madrid win La Liga as a result.
