Thousands greet Ronaldo’s “dream” move
Cristiano Ronaldo was greeted by a huge crowd of adoring fans as he was officially unveiled as a Real Madrid player on Monday evening.
The former Manchester United player, who moved to the Bernabeu in a world record £80m deal, said that it was a “childhood dream” to sign for the Spanish giants.
It is thought 80,000 fans flocked to the club’s stadium for the event – the largest such gathering since Diego Maradona attracted 75,000 when signing for Napoli from Barcelona in 1984.
Realize there is a difference in sporting culture but still find it amazing 80,000 people showed up just to witness Ronaldo being presented by Real Madrid. When the Toronto Maple Leafs signed Mike Komisarek 60,000 people didn’t fill up the Rogers Centre to witness it. (Yes this was a slight shot at the Maple Leafs.) Even marquee Baseball or Football free agent signings don’t receive that type of hype when being introduced. While I have no problem with this but found it interesting that Eusebio was there today considering his Benfica side and Alfredo di Stefano Real Madrid side were neck and neck during the 1960′s
