Eto’o Confident That Barcelona Will Overcome Athletic Bilbao In Copa Final

With the decider looming ever closer, Barca’s goal-machine is not even contemplating defeat…

Article

There chances are still slim but Athletic Bilbao must love the timing of this Copa del Rey. With only three days between games plus Barcelona with an eye looking ahead to the Champions League final, Athletic Bilbao has a fighting chance. If this game were at the of the season with Barcelona having a week to prepare I’d wish Athletic Bilbao has they would need it.

Manuel Pellegrini To Leave Villarreal in 2010

After a successful six years in charge, the Chilean will leave the Yellow Submarine at the end of next season…

Article

No one can deny the fantastic job Manuel Pellegrini has done in his six season at Villarreal but if is already committed to leave next season Villarreal might as well thank Pellegrini for the job he has done and send him on his way. It would make it tough for any transfer targets this summer to committed to Villarreal knowing a new coach with a whole new set of ideas would be coming in the follow year.

Delio Rossi: Coppa Italia Is Do Or Die For Lazio

The Aquilotti tactician believes this is the most important match for the club since he has been in charge…

Article

Always like it when two mid table teams face off in a cup final as you know that winning a trophy would mean that much more to a fan base which doesn’t see hardware coming their way every season.

Gerrard Picks Up Footballer Writers’ POTY award

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

stevengerrard

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has been voted England’s Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers’ Association.

The England midfielder topped the poll of journalists ahead of Manchester United duo Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney to win the prestigious accolade, which has been running since 1948.

Article

Steven Gerrard is a better choice than Ryan Giggs who won the Players Association player of the year two weeks ago. While Liverpool are still a good bet to fall short this season there is no denying that Steve Gerrard is the main reason Liverpool has taken Manchester United right down to the wire for the first time in many years.

Manchester United striker Carlos Tevez could make a dramatic switch to rivals Manchester City after his agent Kia Joorabchian revealed the Argentine striker would join a club not in the Champions League. (Daily Express)

I’m sure there isn’t a major club in world football who hasn’t gone to the accountant wondering if there is enough money to make a bid for Tevez this summer.

However, United are looking to see if there are any loopholes in Tevez’s contract that will allow them to sign the 25-year-old for free. (The Sun)

You mean after nearly 18 months on the books, Manchester United just now are trying to find a loophole in Tevez’s contact? Have no idea how this theory made it to print. Besides what are the chances Carlos Tevez would stab Kia Joorabchian in the back? You can say a lot of things about Joorabchian but he hasn’t done Tevez wrong guiding his career.

Former Manchester United captain Steve Bruce, who is now manager of Wigan, has warned Tevez that he would be mad to leave Old Trafford, with Liverpool also keen on the former West Ham forward. (Daily Mail)

I wonder how much passion former Manchester United captain Steve Bruce will have in his pre game speech today? With Wigan safely in mid table, Manchester United must love the timing of this match up.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is lining up a £15m bid for Valencia forward David Silva. (The Sun)

Valencia wouldn’t return a phone call regarding a £15m offer for David Silva.

Arsenal will renew their interest in Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso but will have to pay about £18m for the Spaniard.(The Guardian)

The same chances Arsenal pony up £18m for Alonso are about the same odds Liverpool would want to sell Alonso to another big four club.

Blackburn have inquired about taking Barcelona striker Bojan Krkic on loan next season. (The Sun)

Speaking of clubs who wouldn’t return a phone call. Besides Barcelona are still focused on this year. Any decisions regarding 2009-2010 would be made later on this summer.

Everton will hope to sign Cardiff midfielder Joe Ledley for £3.5m in the summer. (The Sun)

Could see a couple more clubs entering the Joe Ledley race which will drive up the price to the £5m plus price range.

Report: Chelsea Met With Milan’s Carlo Ancelotti On Monday Evening

The Blues were keen to find out whether the Italian tactician will arrive at Stamford Bridge in the summer or stay at the San Siro…

Article

Maybe Ancelotti met with Chelsea to what ask exactly did they with Andriy Shevchenko who after his return to Milan is just a shell of his former self. I could understand Chelsea having an interest in Ancelotti mostly due to him being able to achieve success in the Champions League but just can’t see Chelsea being worse off if they had to go to plan B in their search for a new coach.

Rummenigge optimistic over deal for Van Gaal

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge remains confident Louis van Gaal will be their new boss.

The Bundesliga giants have targeted the AZ Alkmaar coach as the man they want to be Jurgen Klinsmann’s permanent replacement.

Article

With former Barcelona coach Louis van Gaal having one year left at current club AZ they would be hard pressed to keep him next season. Teams like Bayern Munich don’t come calling very often. A return to an elite European club would be too much for van Gaal to turn down.

Liverpool have been in contact with Carlos Tevez’s agent as the forward’s future at Manchester United hangs in the balance.
(The Sun)

Mentioned this back in March. There is no better way for Liverpool to tip the balance of power in their direction than to pony up the dough and sign Carlos Tevez next season.

Inter Milan are interested in signing Chelsea midfielder Jon Obi Mikel. (The Sun)

With Patrick Viera on his last legs and Jon Obi Mikel playing second fiddle to Michael Essien at Chelsea, there is a match here. Would Chelsea do business with Inter Milan however is the real question.

Manchester United will move for Wigan’s Antonio Valencia if winger Cristiano Ronaldo leaves Old Trafford. (Daily Mail)

Always love how these rumours appears the week United face the player in question.

Liverpool will make a £12m bid for Middlesbrough’s Stewart Downing at the end of the season. (Daily Mail)

I’m sure a couple of teams didn’t mind Newcastle’s win yesterday as it means Downing will be on move come this summer.

Bolton have slapped a £20m price tag on defender Gary Cahill to put off interest from Arsenal. (Daily Mail)

Bolton could of slapped a 10 million price tag on Gary Cahill to scare off Arsenal. To be fair to Cahill he has done his career some good since coming over from Aston Villa in 2008.

Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill says next season’s Europa League – the new name for the Uefa Cup – has too many games in the schedule. (The Sun)

It annoys me how English clubs treat the Uefa Cup like a red headed step child. Everyone knows the money is in the Premiership but across Europe winning the Uefa Cup is a great feat. In England teams like Villa run out a youth side against CSKA Moscow in the Uefa Cup.

AC Milan boss Carlo Ancelotti will need reassurances about his status before he would consider taking the Chelsea job, having spoken to the Blues last summer before they appointed Luis Felipe Scolari instead. (The Times)

One thing I could safely say is if Ancelotti lead Chelsea to a 5th place finish like he did with A.C Milan last year he would be sent packing in a hurry.

Philadelphia Union – Newest MLS Team

PHILADELPHIA — Major League Soccer’s newest team will be called the Philadelphia Union.

Team officials announced the 16th MLS franchise’s name, logo and colors before a crowd of cheering supporters at City Hall on Monday.

Article

Wise thinking pairing a blue collar name for a blue collar town. Sadly haven’t been able to find a real good picture of the teams logo/uniform to determine if I like it or not however.

Five Quick European Thoughts

Monday, May 11th, 2009

real-madrid1

(It’s actually going to be way more than that this week.)

- Why did Real Madrid even bother going to Valencia this weekend? Just an awful performance from a team who seems to have written off the rest of this season. Everyone knows Barcelona is a lock for La Liga but losing 3-0 against Valencia, Real Madrid showed they have no fight left in them. Not even for pride purposes.

- Would be a shame if Andres Iniesta misses the Champions League final due to his thigh injured picked up against Villarreal. As a neutral you’d want to see Barcelona’s best go up against Manchester United’s best. Double blow this weekend for Barcelona who have Iniesta and Henry as an injury doubt for May 27th and thanks to a late Villarreal goal they must wait another week to clinch the La Liga crown.

- Advantage Rangers with their 1-0 victory over Celtic at the Ibrox which leap frogs them over Celtic and into 1st in Scotland by two points. Gordon Strachan will most likely spend a great deal of his time explaining why he left Aiden McGeady on the bench against their fiercest rival.

- Nice to see Maurice Edu get the start in an Old Firm game. With each passing week Edu is showing the talent which lead Rangers to shell out 5 million for his services.

- Jupp Heynckes must of figured his coaching career was at an end after being sacked by Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2007. You’d think the same too if you were sacked after a run of 17 games without a win. Funny how things work out at times. Two wins in charge of Bayern Munich after taking over from Jürgen Klinsmann now sees Bayern Munich in a tie for first place with Wolfsburg.

- I still could understand Felix Magath leaving Wolfsburg but his timing is simply awful to cut the legs of this Wolfsburg team so close to the end of the season. After their 4-1 defeat to Stuttgart, it’s advantage Bayern Munich for the Bundesliga crown.

- Two teams going about it in different ways. Heading into the Coppa Italia, Lazio were defeated at home by Udinese 3-1. Sampdoria on the other hand took the sting out of their 3-1 defeat the previous week to Genoa by out classing Reggina 5-0.

- Inter Milan may of had to deal with questions surrounding their 2002 collapse but thanks to a Vincenzo Iaquinta the Serie A finish line is well within reach.

- A handful of times this season Inter has dropped points but the following day A.C Milan and previously Juventus weren’t able to gain ground and dropped points themselves.

- Not everyday you see a second division side win silverware in any European league so it was refreshing to see Guingamp upset Rennes to earn the Coupe De France. After American international Carlos Bocanegra opened up the scoring in the 69th minute. Guingamp’s Eduardo Ribeiro dos Santos struck back three minutes later and then scored the winner in the 83rd minute.

epl

- Sam Smith wrote an excellent book in the mid 90′s called the Jordan rules detailing what it was like to play with Michael Jordon and how there were two rules. One for Michael Jordan and another for everyone else. Well, someone should take the framework of the Jordan rules and write a new book called the Ronaldo rules. Quite honestly I have little problem with Ronaldo’s displays of immaturity for Manchester United. Watching the game I kept hearing the color commenter criticizing Ronaldo acting out saying it’s unprofessional and most other players wouldn’t get away with it. Of course they wouldn’t, quite frankly most players are a dime a dozen and can be replaced. With some players you have to take the bad if the good out weights it. Sir Alex Ferguson has dealt with this before. If he tried to tame Eric Cantona and Roy Keane for example neither would have the career they had. Both Cantona and Keane needed to be on that edge for them to succeed. If Keane never played with a chip on his shoulder for being deemed too small growing up in Ireland he’d never have become the player he did at Nottingham Forrest and then Manchester United. It’s a different chip but Ronaldo’s ego quite frankly has a lot to do with the success he has been able to achieve thus far in his career.

- Watching the score this weekend and they were talking out loud hoping United replace Ronaldo with Frank Ribery stemming from Ronaldo acting out, then comparing him to David Beckham and Ruud van Nistelrooy. The main reason Sir Alex Ferguson got rid of David Beckham and Ruud van Nisterlrooy is because at those times United were not the top team in England and a shake up was needed. When Beckham packed his bags to Madrid it was because Arsenal were the top team in England and Chelsea were at its peak when van Nisterlrooy followed suit. With Ronaldo peaking at the right time this year much to James Sharman dismay United would be fools to entertain moving a player who hasn’t yet even reached his peak. Just image the backlash if United become EPL champions this year, then sell Ronaldo, then allow either Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal to overtake them the following year?

(If you are not Canadian the next three points will go over your head.)

- I’m not naive enough to think being on TV is easy but does anyone like the score’s James Sharman and if so why? (No, him being a Liverpool fan doesn’t count.) One of my pet peeves of football coverage in this country and that you are deemed worthy enough to cover it by having a British accent. (or in some cases a fake one) I’m convinced that most of the people watching football on thescore are not originally from the U.K. Let me see a different viewpoint, allow for a Nuno, Fabio, (insert Asian name here) just someone with a different viewpoint on the world’s game then what I see on TV week after week. I’ve meet politicians who are more likable.

- B.T.W Neil Webb is not your mate, quit kissing up to him. The only reason he appears on the show is for the pay cheque.

- I’m sure Kristian Jack will be happy to hear that I actually enjoy his take on football. (Just in cause anyone can’t detect sarcasm, I don’t really think he cares.) I don’t need to agree with what someone has to say as long as they have good reasoning behind their opinions I can respect that. Jack comes off like a normal guy taking about a sport he loves.

- Carlos Tevez, you have every right to feel how you feel. You are getting a raw deal if you end up leaving United but save the press talk until after the season. Talking so openly about your position doesn’t do anyone any good. Once July 1st hits there will be plenty of interest in your services one way or another.

- Still not the biggest Dimitar Berbatov fan but his first touch is simply just a thing of class. The way he controlled the ball sitting up Tevez’s goal was first rate.

- Guus Hiddink deserves praise for the way his Chelsea team played yesterday against Arsenal. It could of been so easy for Chelsea with 3rd place all but locked up to look past Arsenal and just focus on the FA Cup final. Instead for the second time this week it was another men against boys performance for Arsenal at home.

- Arsenal can do the business against the likes of Wigan and Middlesborugh but against the big boys and in the big games they need to find a way to overcome the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool. After their performance against Manchester United mid week, you’d think the Arsenal players would want to put their best foot forward against Chelsea. Don’t know which performance was more disappointing for an Arsenal fan. Mid week against Manchester United or this weekend against Chelsea.

- Arsenal also need to shore up their central back position. Just too many goals they concede from set pieces. While fans would want Arsenal to spend money on a flashy player like Frank Ribery, a player like Fulham’s Brede Hangeland or Porto’s Bruno Alves is needed more.

- Classy move on the part of Arsenals fan to cheer Kieran Gibbs after his mistake mid week. Sadly for them they had precious little to cheer about the rest of the game.

- Morten Gamst Pedersen picked a good time to score his first goal of the season. His goal opened Blackburn’s account against Portsmouth which guided them to a priceless 2-0 victory at home against Portsmouth.

- From a team in Blackburn who got it done at home to a Hull City team who needed a victory at home against Stoke and couldn’t get it done. With Hull falling into the bottom three with either a Newcastle or Middlesborugh win today, I would not want to be a part of the Hull dressing room. Things must be tense in that dressing room with everyone on pins and needles right about now.

- Who knows, if Fulham could do it last year maybe West Brom could pull off another great escape like their 2005 escape. At least they are going down with a fight. With Liverpool next week however their chances are not very good but I’m sure Liverpool would of preferred it if West Brom were already doomed to the Championship going into this match.

- Sunderland didn’t exactly set the world on fire but at least they picked up an important point on the road against Bolton.

- Everton and Tottenham sure played like teams who were already look ahead to the summer break.

- Note to Nicholas Bendtner and Ledley King. When you are rich and famous nothing good can happen to you at the bar.

- Sad to hear the news that Wilson Palacios brother was murder this past weekend back in Honduras. First being kidnapped last year and this now sad end to his life.

- Impressive win by Liverpool against a tricky West Ham team. When facing sides like West Ham you’d don’t want to give them confidence that they can make a game out of it. With Steven Gerrard scoring in the second minute they pretty much made it known that there was only going to be one result.

Report: Inter & Genoa Agree Diego Milito Terms

‘El Principe’ is set to join the Serie A kings…

Serie A champions Inter have reached an agreement with Liguria-based outfit Genoa to sign Argentine striker Diego Milito this summer, reports the Corriere dello Sport.

The deal was struck over the past few hours and Inter will allegedly pay the Grifoni €16 million plus the co-ownership of forward Robert Acquafresca, who is currently on loan with Cagliari, and the services of young defender Leonardo Bonucci on loan.

Article

I can see Genoa cashing on Milito but there is no possible upside for Genoa to sell Milito right now. With Genoa chasing a Champions League spot being only one point behind Fiorentina it would be a huge buzz kill for this Genoa side to know they will lose their best player next year.

Walcott signs new Gunners deal

Arsenal starlet Theo Walcott has signed a new long-term contract with the Premier League club.

The 20-year-old England international, who joined the Gunners from Southampton in January 2006, is reported to have agreed a four-year deal worth £60,000-a-week.

Article

No real opinion on this just figured some of you would want to know. Good for Arsenal to lock up one of their key players going forward.

Negredo: Madrid return conditional

Almeria striker Alvaro Negredo would relish a return to Real Madrid this summer, but warned his former employers that it would not be as fifth-choice forward.

Negredo has impressed hugely at Almeria since joining from Madrid in 2007 and it seems inevitable that this summer he will be leaving the Andalusian club, for whom he has netted 19 league goals already this season.

Article

Alvaro Negredo otherwise known as Dani Güiza who also had an understand year for a mid table La Liga club and got to cash in on it. With Real Madrid having a buy back clause of 5 million euros they hold all the cards if they wish to bring Negredo back next year.
