Money Over Loyalty?

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

The question was asked in one of the comments yesterday “Wonder what it’s really like being part of these teams where money is no object…. Do you really have any loyalty to the team, does the team (team owners) have any loyalty to the players or are they just commodities?” Naturally I don’t have the slightest of clues what it is like playing for a team where money is no object. The second part of the comment is best looked during the saga between Luis Figo, Barcelona and Real Madrid.

A book could be written about the events that transpired in 2000 when Figo became public enemy number one with Barcelona fans. The coles notes version goes something like this. Luis Figo coming off a year where he was the front runner for the Ballon d’Or asked to have his contact renegotiated. Only one problem with that request, Barcelona had already re-worked Figo’s contact the year before and were unwilling to do it again. In an attempt to strong arm Barcelona, Figo struck a deal with Florentino Pérez who was looking to become Real Madrid new president. Perez would give Figo the contact he was looking for and with Figo on board Perez was soon elected president. Perez lived up to his word and met Barcelona buyout figure of 65 million euros for Figo’s services. A figure that to this day stands as one of the highest transfer fees ever paid. With Perez living up to his word Figo now had to live up to his as there was a reported 30 million euro penalty if any party broke their word.

Football as in most sports is built about passion. Without that passion or fanaticism sports wouldn’t be a central part of our culture. With that being said it also clouds judgment. People seem to forget that football players are still people with the same basic human emotions. While the amounts of money are on a different scale the same issues remain. If you are working an office job making 40k a year and seeing the guy across the street working the same office job making 50k a year. Guess what you are going to want a larger slice of the pie. People who say x amount of money is enough are usually people who doesn’t have that amount of money. Just like the middle class wishes to get richer, the rich also want to get richer. The same goes with football, if a player looks around and notices another player making more then him well he is going to want a new deal. I do believe that people should live up to their contracts but I’m not going to sit here and say that I can’t understand someone’s desire to be paid more if they deserved more.

Luis Figo as in most players know they are a commodity and the window to make the most money in return for their services is small. The idea of loyalty is nice but if that was the case Figo would of never left Sporting Clube de Portugal, the team he supported as a boy. Being loyal or not the end result when ones career comes to an end will be the same. Roy Keane was loyal to Manchester United but it still ended in a pink slip when United no longer wanted his services. The likes of Paolo Maldini are very rare in this era. Despite all that I do believe most players still do play for the shirt and want to win for the fans who support them.

This idea of loyalty is also a two way street. It would be in a player’s best interest to get the most out of his services while playing because no one is going to be looking over you once you are unable to preform on a football field. It would also be in a player’s best interest to realize while cold hearted the value of a player to a football club is directly tied into performances on the field. Once the player is past their prime the football club is well within their right to look for a replacement as Luis Figo found out when after his six year contact expired in 2005 and Real Madrid were not interested in resigning him for further years.

Champions League Match Day 5 Review

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

- Would of never predicted that a team lead by Henk Ten Cate would win against a Jose Mourinho lead side. That is why they play the game as Panathinaikos walked away worthy winners with their 1-0 victory over Inter Milan.

- On the bright side for Inter fans is despite the loss they are through to the knock out stages. With Inter currently first in the group and Chelsea now in second it would be a casual fans dream to see Inter-Chelsea face off in the round of 16.

- Roma avenged their shock opening loss to Cluj with a 3-1 victory. The Italian giants are still not free and clear as they will need to at least draw at home to Bordeaux in order to advance.

- Anorthosis players and fans will have nightmares about losing a 2-0 lead and allowing Werder Bremen to grab a late point.

- Guess no one sent the memo to Basel players that they had a Champions League game yesterday. Off to the UEFA Cup for Shakhtar Donetsk after their 5-0 victory at home.

- After drawing Basel in matchday four Barcelona were no longer in a giving mood as they out classed Sporting 5-2 in a battle for first place in Group C

- Just wouldn’t feel like a European night without seeing Steven Gerrard score. At least he didn’t dive to earn the goal.

Del Piero: Inter Can Run, But Can’t Hide From Juventus

A six point gap, Inter running away with the title, but the Juve legend isn’t worried, as it won’t last long.

Article

These comments would hold more weight if Inter didn’t neutralize Del Piero and the rest of his Juventus team mates when the two faced off last weekend.

AC Milan chief Galliani expects Shevchenko stay

AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani insists Andriy Shevchenko is staying for the entire season.

On-loan from Chelsea, Shevchenko has been linked with Real Madrid, but Galliani says: “Will he leave in January? I don’t believe so. I don’t think that is Andriy’s intention.”

Article

Don’t think anyone would notice if Shevchenko left or not. Needless to say his second stint in Milan isn’t going so well.

Milan And Real Madrid Ponder Pato-Ramos Exchange Deal – Reports

The Rossoneri are still keen on the Merengues defender and could use Brazilian starlet Pato as bait.

Article

Tis the season for swap rumours and while this one is interesting on many different levels very few of these moves actually happen. The last major one I can think of (I’m sure there are others but they escape me right now) was the Julio Batista-Jose Antonio Reyes Arsenal to Real Madrid loan swap back in 2006/2007.

Striker Didier Drogba is on his way out of Chelsea – after he was revealed to have opened talks with Inter Milan about a January switch to Italy. (Various)

The move could be facilitated in a £30m swap deal with Brazilian striker Adriano. (Daily Mirror)

Even with Chelsea and Inter unlikely to send Christmas cards to each other, the possibility exists that these clubs may trade one team’s headache for the other.

Arsenal and Tottenham are bracing themselves for a £5m tug of war to land Wolves’ 21-year-old Welsh international goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey. (Daily Star)

How come the media always link Tottenham and Arsenal with the same players?

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has put Sevilla’s 21-year-old Argentine centre-back Federico Fazio on his January transfer wish-list. (Daily Mirror)

Dealing with Sevilla’s chairmen José María del Nido is like pulling teeth. Good for him however making sure he gets top dollar for every player he decides to sell.

Wigan boss Steve Bruce is to switch his striker search to Reading’s Kevin Doyle, with the Republic of Ireland star rated at £8m. (Daily Mirror)

The transfer fee for high end players I can understand but 8 million pounds for average players like Kevin Doyle leave me shaking my head.

Manchester City and Real Madrid are locked in a battle for the signature of £16m-rated Real Zaragoza striker Ricardo Oliveira. (The Sun)

One bad year at A.C Milan and Ricardo Oliverira career has yet to recover. Spending the winter in Madrid or Manchester another tough choice there.

Manchester City are plotting a £100m-plus transfer spending spree in the January transfer window with Chelsea and Arsenal defenders John Terry and Kolo Toure on the shortlist, along with Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. (Daily Telegraph)

Add John Terry to the list.

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres claims he wants to stay at the club for life. (Various)

Or until Rafa Benitez leaves whichever one is greater. I’ll say this however, to not like Torres is to not like ice cream. The man is everything you could want out of a star player.

Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill has told John Carew he is no longer an automatic first-choice pick as a striker. (Various)

All because of a lap dance the day before a UEFA Cup match last month.

Champions League Match Day 5 Review

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

- Another series of games that only a football lover could enjoy. Got to watch Zenit and Juventus play to a 0-0 draw only to have Manchester United vs Villarreal match the same scoreline.

- Say what you want about Cristiano Ronaldo and everyone does but name me a player that takes the same kind of punishment week in and week out? Does he play it up? Sure, one can say that but not a game goes by without someone on the other team isn’t trying to knock Ronaldo down. Joan Capdevila challenge late in the game was ugly and deserved a straight red card. If Ronaldo’s leg was placed on the ground inside of up in the air he could of easily had his leg broken.

- What happen to the Nani I once knew? At Sporting he was a player who could decide a game. At Manchester United he has neither progressed as a player or even scarier matured.

- How about Porto without the likes of Jose Bosingwa and Ricardo Quaresma going into a hostile environment in Turkey missing their leader Lucho Gonzalez and walking away with a 2-1 victory over Fenerbahce? Lisandro Lopez second goal was due luck since hand ball wasn’t called but regardless Porto went in there looking for the win and got what they deserved.

- Needless to say I’m quite happy seeing Porto and Sporting Clube de Portugal advance to the knockout stages of the Champions League. Hopefully one of them can sneak into the quarterfinals.

- What in the world happen against Aalborg there Celtic? After that performance Celtic completely deserve to sit alongside hated rivals Rangers who are both knocked out of European competition.

- Good luck in the UEFA Cup Aalborg who gave Villarreal and Celtic all they can handle after many people expected them to run over Aalborg.

- Also nice to see Bayern Munich move on to the round of 16 come February. Something just didn’t feel right last year with the Germany Giants missing from the Champions League.

Inter Consider Adriano-Benzema Swap With Lyon – Reports

The Nerazzurri have laid eyes on the striker and know what it might take to ensure he arrives sooner rather than later.

Article

With Adriano off field antics becoming more of an issue Inter Milan may end up being happy pawning him off on any team willing to take a chance on the Brazilian striker. As the article would suggest even with Adriano as a make weight in the deal it will take a lot of cash for Lyon to part with Benzema.

BREAKING NEWS: Zenit-Juventus Game At Risk

Tonight’s Champions League tie could be postponed after a car blew up this morning in Saint Petersburg killing three people.

Article

Anyone who carries a live grenade in a car has these things coming to them at some point.

Márquez: Change Was Needed At Barcelona

Rafa Márquez believes that changing coaches in the summer was the best thing that could happen at Barcelona, but not because he felt that Frank Rijkaard needed to leave.

Article

Football is a game of cycles and last year the Ronaldinho-Deco-Rijkaard lead Barcelona era came to an end. Barcelona success so far this year was to realize that and change the core of this team going forward.

EPL Gossip Tuesday November 25th

Manchester City will move for Arsenal defender Kolo Toure and Bayern Munich striker Lukas Podoloski in the January transfer window. (Daily Telegraph)

Add two more to the Manchester City transfer list. Toure is going nowhere but Podoloski wants out so at least that is a possibility.

Midfielder Charles N’Zogbia could be leaving Newcastle for Paris St Germain in January but the Magpies are determined to hang on to goalkeeper Shay Given. (Daily Mirror)

Would be best for both club and player. While you can win with kids you’ll never win with players like N’Zogbia who is too much of a head case. With N’Zogbia moving back to France it will increase his profile when it comes to playing for the national team one day.

Arsenal and Tottenham are keeping tabs on 18-year-old FC Copenhagen defender Mathais Jorgensen, who made his debut for Denmark in last week’s 1-0 loss to Wales. (Daily Star)

Would be par for the course for Arsenal to replace Gallas with an 18 year old.

Blackburn’s Martin Olsson says he “destroyed most things in the dressing room” in frustration after being sent off at Tottenham on Sunday – and boss Paul Ince told him it was better than not showing any emotion. (The Guardian)

It would of been best if Olsson didn’t commit the two silly fouls which got him sent off and put his team at a disadvantage.

Five Quick European Football Thoughts

Monday, November 24th, 2008

- Another vintage performance by a Mourinho lead squad. Was it pretty? No, but style points don’t factor into Championships. Mourinho set an gameplan that render Juve’s attacking options ineffective and trusted the talent up front to score for Inter. A.C Milan dropping points to Torino was just icing on the cake for the Inter boss.

- Unless you are a Real Madrid fan it’s real hard to find fault with the way Barcelona handle themselves both on and off the pitch. So many top teams makes excuses after dropping points but Barcelona were gracious in giving Getafe credit for their well earned point.

- Goal scoring may of been at a premium in England this weekend but it sure wasn’t in Germany with all but one game having three or more goals scored this weekend.

- With Gonzalo Higuaín injury looking serious watch for the rumor mill to work overtime linking any in form striker to Real Madrid.

- It appears that a visit to Leece was just what Roma needed ahead of a critical Champions League encounter with CFR Cluj mid week.

EPL Week In Review November 24th

Monday, November 24th, 2008

- Some weeks are memorable, last week was not one of them. Take away the Manchester City/Arsenal, Middlesbrough/Bolton, and Portsmouth/Hull contests and only 3 goals were scored in the other 6 matches. Those are goal totals you’d expect in France’s Ligue 1.

- Last time Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United were all shut out on the same day was back in 1993. Let’s hope it’s another 15 years before that occurs again.

- Last week I mentioned “Benitez cares about perception he’ll stick with Torres and Keane up front. If Benitez cares about winning he’ll partner up Torres and Kuyt in the upcoming stretch of games.” We saw how that turned out. Robbie Keane will shoulder the burden for Liverpool misfiring but it isn’t like Torres is helping out his fellow strike partner either.

- Can’t believe I’m championing Dirk Kuyt to be featured up front instead of a wide position. Last year the only thing I championed was for Dirk Kuyt to be benched.

- Have to love Wenger’s excuses at this point. To say a scoreline flattered Manchester City is insulting to a team that quite frankly outclassed Arsenal.

- William Gallas isn’t the only problem on Arsenal but he will shoulder the blame for Arsenal’s downfall this season. There are a bunch of cancers on this Arsenal team. This Gunners squad have kids who haven’t done a thing in football acting like world champions.

- The Joe Kinnear revolution moves forward with there 0-0 draw with Chelsea. Sure, the game plan was to park themselves in front of goal but it’s still up to Chelsea to break through and they couldn’t thanks to a strong performance from Fabricio Coloccini and some great saves from Shay Given.

- Manchester United had a chance to make up ground on Chelsea and Liverpool but couldn’t break through against a strong Aston Villa side. While there is no shame is drawing Aston Villa, championship sides find a way to win in that spot.

- Wigan 2 Everton 1 tomorrow with a penalty decision costing Everton the game. After the weekend results I’m owed a couple of goals when watching a match.
