Why the world hates Cristiano Ronaldo

Outside of the North American sports landscape there seems to be two types of people in this world. The first lavish massive amounts of praise. Then there are those who lavish massive amounts of scorn with regards to anything having to do with Cristiano Ronaldo.

While it’s a tad early in placing Ronaldo in the company of Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldinho, he is quickly taking his place as the dominant attacking midfielder in the current era. That begs the question unless you were a Real Madrid or Barcelona fan, Ronaldinho and Zidane were widely praised and deservedly so for what they bring to the game. I’m also sure that even a Barcelona fan would respect the skills of Zidane and the same would hold true with a Real Madrid fan with Ronaldinho.

That is not the case with the Manchester United wonderkid. He is one part adored and that admiration fuels the oppose view to dislike him even more. A few reasons for this will be listed below.

Not to turn this into a gossip article but Cristiano Ronaldo seems like the type of guy who would hit on your girlfriend at a bar even if he knows she came into the bar with you. The boy just has that look to him where as Zidane and Ronaldinho seem to be more willingly to actually have a beer with you. Ronaldo’s looks lead to women liking him which in turn causes the boy band effect where males dislike him for that sole reason.

You’re in trouble if you came walking into a club with that girl.

Another cause would be the digital age we are living in. While I will attest to the fact I am an admirer of his game I can also say that his coverage is over blown. The daily updates regards all things concerning Cristiano Ronaldo can easily make one sour on a person. Over exposure is never a good thing.

For example in the last 24 hours.

I think by now you get the idea. This is a daily occurrence as well. I do reckon that one could call me a hypocrite on this topic since two out of the first eight articles have been on Cristiano Ronaldo. The topic has been playing around in my mind for awhile so while its my intention to not cover the same people to keep things interesting. An exception was made in this case.

The last reason is that Cristiano Ronaldo and English football from the outside looking in didn’t appear to be an ideal fit. Here we have a flamboyant midfielder with his step overs and ball tricks playing in a league that emphasize a smash mouth style of knock the man down when he has the ball. It clashes since his style of play has taken quite long to be mildly accepted with traditional English fan base.

After the Wayne Rooney incident he was turned into public enemy number one with an English public who already were not enamored with a player who in their eyes dives, whined to the referees and basically represented everything that English Football is not suppose to be about. Some have been won over with his form the last two season where as some will never forgive him for the events of World Cup 2006 between England and Portugal. That game was the beginning of what transformed Cristiano Ronaldo into the most talked about football player whether you love him or hate him.
