Liverpool vs Chelsea

Chelsea is going into this game with the advantage after John Arne Riise own goal gave Chelsea the all important away goal. Chelsea also goes into this game riding high after beating Manchester United on the weekend.

While Liverpool’s manager Rafa Benitez hasn’t shown the ability to guide Liverpool to the top after a 38 game domestic season. When it comes to game planning for one game especially on these big European nights, few are better then the Liverpool coach. If the Reds can walk into Camp Nou last year and win in the Champions League then Liverpool go into to Stamford Bridge and collect that needed away goal.

Sinnacle Prediction

Liverpool 3 - 1

The Second Guessing of Scolari

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Leading up to Euro 2008 the Portuguese press has been enamored with questioning every move that Luiz Felipe Scolari has made leading up to the tournament. Who will play up front? Is the one striker system outdated? Is Ricardo still fit to be the number one goalie? All these lingering questions have demonstrated a shift in opinion towards the Brazilian boss.

On the road to Euro 2004 the Portuguese faithful were thrilled to have Scolari at the helm. An entire nation wanted to erase the memory of the disastrous 2002 World Cup disappointment. With Euro 2004 being the first major football tournament hosted in Portugal it was of the utmost importance to ensure that recent history did not repeat itself. With Scolari leading Portugal to their first ever major tournament final that it did not. Due to the success two years previous, in 2006 a quiet confidence started to set in among the Portuguese football fans. Many of the international media predictions had Portugal succumbing to defeat against either Holland or Argentina in the second round. The Portugese press however stood behind Scolari, championing the team he selected not to mention the man himself.

In this modern age of football where coaches are mere mercenaries switching jobs like Guus Hiddink, Scolari is a refreshing change. He didn’t leave in quest for a bigger pay day. He could of coached England with millions more in his bank account but stayed faithful to a country that he can’t even call his own. How many other coaches at the end of their contract would turn down such a high profile job out of commitment to his current team. He felt that he wouldn’t coach the Portuguese team effectively knowing that he would have a new job at the end of the tournament? Scolari may of ended up coaching against the English team that he’d be leaving for. In that situation how could a coach look his players in the eye and tell them to beat a team that in a matter of weeks he’d be coaching for?

That faith is now not being repaid back to Scolari which is disconcerting to the Portugese football faithful. The fans are now longing for the days where we, as Ruud Gullit termed it, “played sexy football.” The 90’s was a decade of unfulfilled promise in Portuguese football. Portugal was going into the decade with so much promise coming off the heels of back to back youth world cups championships lead by the likes of Luis Figo and Rui Costa. When it was time to break into the world’s stage at the senior level Portugal came up just short repeatedly with only a second round defeat in Euro 1996 to show for an entire decade. It’s one thing to create jaw dropping moments in a game against Luxembourg. But when pushed to the next level where teams have to grind out a result against the Italy’s or Germany’s of the world, Portugal fell short. That changed in Euro 2004 when Scolari’s men edge out Spain in a hard fought 1-0 victory and advancing to the final eight. Previous Portuguese teams would of wilted under that pressure.

Fast forward to the recent Euro 2008 qualifying. Portugal never got going in the qualifying campaign with a defeat against Poland and a draw versus Finland at the start. After playing in the biggest game of their lives a couple of months earlier in the World Cup Semi Finals versus France, a let down is bound to happen when playing on the road against Finland and Poland with all due respect to those teams. In the middle of qualifying Scolari got suspending for throwing a punch to Serbia’s Ivica Dragutinovic. To couple that effect, teams now gear up for Portugal since beating a World Cup semi finalist is an impressive feat to accomplish. Portugal no longer sneaks up on teams, they are now considered part of the football elite due in no small part to Scolari’s accomplishments.

Sometimes we the fans of the Portugal National Team take for granted the success of the last four years. A period that has seen Portugal grow in stature in the eyes of the football public. Scolari has had to deal with criticism over Portugal’s lack luster Euro 2008 qualifying campaign that saw them finish second behind Poland and only barely able to clinch their spot on the last day in a 0-0 tie against Finland.

While it made for a nervous 90 minutes the end result would have been the same be it a 5-0 win or 0-0 draw. Scolari crafted a smart game plan utilizing his remaining roster to maximum effect. With first choice defenders Ricardo Carvalho and Jorge Andrade injured, Scolari gave Pepe his first start for the national team pairing him up with former Porto team mate Bruno Alves to go along with another Porto defender in Jose Bosingwa. Having three players in the back four that are used to playing together was key in holding a Finland team in check. The fact that it was not an epic performance hasn’t pleased many in the press who still dream of the days where Portugal would win with style, but never after the opening round. It may be the end of an era for Scolari after Euro 2008, but to paraphrase the Joni Mitchell song, some people don’t know what they’ve got ’til its gone.

Toni To Pip Ronaldo To Ballon d’Or?

There are reports in Italy that Luca Toni could be in the running to beat Cristiano Ronaldo to the Ballon d’Or, if Italy win Euro 2008.

Article

I could see the argument being made. Considering that Ronaldo finished third to Messi in last season’s voting they is an anti Ronaldo sentiment in the voting media. A lot will depend on Manchester United winning the Champions League. If that were to occur then Ronaldo will have the inside track for the award.

Barcelona agree personal terms with Depor’s Coloccini

Barcelona have agreed personal terms with Deportivo La Coruna defender Fabricio Coloccini.

Article

Let the re-tooling begin. Only a matter of time before another Deportivo player Andrés Guardado gets snapped up by a bigger club.

Figo: Jose Should Replace Mancini

Luis Figo has declared that he wants to carry on playing for another year, and has hinted that he would like to see Jose Mourinho replace Roberto Mancini as coach.

Article

The chances of Figo staying at Inter are 50/50 at best. Which are also the odds on Mancini staying on as coach. Even at an advance age Inter was playing their best with Figo feeding through balls to the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimović and Júlio César at the start of the season. Ever since Figo’s injury Inter has been missing the little piece of quality in the midfield.

EPL Gossip for April 30th

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Tottenham want to offer Dimitar Berbatov to Barcelona in a sensational swap deal for Samuel Eto’o. (Daily Star, Daily Mirror)

Smart move by Tottenham, I’d make that switch. Eto’o is one of a number of Barcelona players who can use a fresh start and Berbatov whines way to much for my liking. Will Barcelona go for it? Unlikely but I’m sure they wouldn’t dismiss it right away.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been told to forget about trying to sign Portsmouth’s Niko Kranjcar. (Daily Star)

Teams like Arsenal end up buying players from teams like Portsmouth. Personally I believe they are better options on the market then Kranjcar but if Arsenal waive enough money Portsmouth will bite.

But Cesc Fabregas will resist the temptation to leave Arsenal for AC Milan, Real Madrid or Barcelona. (Daily Express)

It’s one thing to say this now. It’s another to say this at the end of the season when Fabregas goes back to Spain. I don’t envision Fabregas wanting to move. I do envision Fabregas having that temptation in the summer.

Manchester City owner Thaksin Shinawatra wants ex-Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho as manager. (Daily Mirror)

Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari is also on the managerial short list. (Daily Mail, The Guardian)

I think Mourinho has had enough of over bearing owners for one life time. Scolari has already dismissed any connection to Manchester City post and most likely wouldn’t commit to anything until after Euro 2008.

Shinawatra already has Croatia boss Slaven Bilic lined up as a replacement. (Daily Express, The Independent)

Bilic I can see taking the post after Euro 2008 since he has played in the EPL before and has mentioned that he wants to coach in England some day.

Champions League Thoughts

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

I really only have one thought aside from what a beautiful kick by Paul Scholes. That is put aside all this talk about beautiful football a true measure of a great team is when the pressure is on can they hold on to a 1-0 lead. Manchester United didn’t look timid and played their game for the entire 90 minutes soaking up whatever Barcelona can throw at them.

Sven to get the sack

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

BBC is reporting that Sven-Goran Eriksson will not be back next season after owner Thaksin Shinawatra told Eriksson he was “not the right man for the job.”

As mentioned I’m not the biggest fan of Sven but he did a fine job at the club this season. Letting him go is foolish. How many coaches with a better resume then Sven will want that job. It’s recipe for disaster. Coaches can not perform their best if they fear the sack after two straight losses.

Barcelona vs Manchester United

Manchester United goes into this contest at the theater of dreams looking like Barcelona has all season with neither team playing up to its potential in recent weeks.

United go into this contest with injury concerns to Wayne Rooney and Nemanja Vidić while Barcelona welcome back captain Carles Puyol after coming back form suspending however Rafael Márquez misses this contest due to suspension.

The talk all week will be how Barcelona won’t park the bus in front of the net like Manchester United did at Camp Nou and play with an attack flare. Manchester United will need to put the performances of the last week behind them if they are to live up to preseason predictions and make it to the finals in Moscow.

Ancelotti: We Must Beat Inter

Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti knows that the only possible result against Inter this weekend is a win as his team continue the race for a Champions League spot.

Article

This game takes even more interest after A.C Milan gained two points on Fiorentina in the race for 4th spot. Inter will not be in the mood to gift their cross town rivals any points with them being on the brink of another scudetto.

Spurs plan £16M bid for Valencia’s Villa

Tottenham are ready to offer £16 million for Valencia striker David Villa.

Article

16 million pounds will not get it done. Tottenham paid that much money last year for Darren Bent and Villa is twice the player that Bent is. If Tottenham want to sign Villa it will be for Fernando Torres type money.

Lucho Issues Atlético Plea

Lucho González has sent out a come and get me plea to Atlético de Madrid after admitting that he wants to test himself in one of Europe’s strongest leagues and leave Porto.

Article

Porto will sell them at some point, they know how to play the transfer game better then 99% of the clubs in world football. They made a nice return on most of the 2004 Champions League team and rebuilt the squad with players such like Pepe, Anderson, Ricardo Quaresma, Lisandro López and Lucho González. Porto will look to do the same with the players still remaining. Lucho should be given more consideration for the Argentinian national team but doesn’t due to playing in Portugal. Moving to Atletico and playing along side Sergio Agüero would increase his profile.

Moratti: Inter Milan like Roma’s Mancini

Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti can’t rule out moving for Roma winger Amantino Mancini.

Article

Inter could use the help in midfield while Roma knows they can’t look to break the bank in a transfer fee due to Mancini entering the last year of his contact. Something will be worked out in the summer that will see Mancini move on.

EPL Gossip for Tuesday April 29th

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

Liverpool could capture Brazil winger Amanatino Mancini for a cut-price £4m as he looks set buy out the last year of his contract at Roma. (Mirror)

Mancini is maddening inconsistent but when he is in top form they are few players more dangerous then him. Mancini rejected a contact extension earlier this month with Roma earlier this month which will pave the way for a summer transfer.

Newcastle want West Ham striker Dean Ashton, and are also interested in Everton left-back Leighton Baines and Rangers defender Carlos Cuellar.

Spaniard Cuellar could be landed as part of a swap deal involving £5m-rated Alan Smith. (Various)

Alan Smith never got going in Newcastle. It might do him some good playing for Rangers and getting some more Champions League experience.

Sunderland will hand manager Roy Keane an £80m transfer kitty. (The Sun)

What is Keane going to do with 80 million pounds. They are only so many Kieran Richardson one can buy. With the exception of a Craig Gordan how many players that are truly worth 10-20 million pounds are going to play for Sunderland? The end result will be Sunderland overpaying for second tier players who will join Sunderland but are not top four class.

Blackburn striker Roque Santa Cruz has pledged his long-term future to the club, despite reported interest from Manchester United. (Various)

Good to see, had a great season for Blackburn. He was already a role player on a big club, I didn’t fancy him wanting to relive that experience again. At some point you really just want to play week in and week out.

Sheffield United striker James Beattie has turned down an £8m move to Middlesbrough. (Daily Star)

Middlesbrough would be foolish to even offer that much money to Beattie. Sheffield United must of been saying dammit since they signed Beattie for 4 million pounds only last summer.

TV Listings Have Been Updated

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

Well for the most part. Fox Sports World didn’t update their TV listing so I’ll check throughout the next couple of days hoping they correct that. Will add the GOLTV listing when they release it tomorrow.
