Rome could lose 2009 European final, say UEFA

Monday, March 31st, 2008

UEFA have threatened to move the 2009 Champions League final from Rome’s Stadio Olimpico if Manchester United fans are targeted in the Italian capital on Tuesday night.

Ten United fans were stabbed last season when the club played Roma, and there was more trouble when Real Madrid visited last month.

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=521592&cc=5901

Good to get the warning out now. Chelsea fans should also get the same heads up traveling to Turkey, who also have a history of violence against British fans. All you need to do is ask Leeds United fans about that.

Career Advice For Steve Mclaren

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Oh where have you gone Steve McClaren a nation turns its lonely eyes to you? Alright who am I kidding, I doubt anyone from England is wondering about your whereabouts but I am. The chances are slim you may read this and even slimmer you will pay any attention, but only one of us are currently unemployed.

It’s too easy to blame you for England’s flame out in Euro 2008 qualifying. While you can never say so yourself, the blame should land squarely on the feet of the FA who hired you. Even your hiring was a mess since you were clearly the second choice. If the English FA didn’t mess that up it would have been Luiz Felipe Scolari who would of taken over the national team and not yourself. Right from the get go you were behind the eight ball since you were neither a) the first choice or b) the poplar choice.

This article could go on and on listing your mistakes, dumping Beckham then bringing him back to the team. Your cute nicknames for players like Becks, Stevie G, JT, standing on the touchline with an umbrella at Wembley stadium, not bringing on Owen Hargreaves the second you tied it up against Croatia but I decided to be kind. You are not a bad coach you were just given a job you could not handle. An international coach can not make mistakes and you were given a job that you had to learn on the fly. The head coach of England is along way from Middlesbrough. A coach of the national team needs big game, big pressure experience which despite making it to the UEFA Cup finals you never had. Steve or Stevie Mc as I’ll now call you it is clear you were punching above your weight when you went from Middlesbrough to the top job in England.

Now is not the time to dwell on the past since that has been beaten to death but rather look to your future. Stevie Mc you need to get out of England, manage anywhere you like but move away from England. No matter what you will never get a top job and any job you do get the fans will never support you. Look the recent history of previous national team coaches.

Graham Taylor - Hasn’t had a job coaching for five years. Now doing TV work for the BBC.

Terry Venables – He was your number two. Got past over for the Ireland job recently. Last head coaching gig was for Leeds United in 2003.

Glenn Hoddle – After his mouth got him fired returned to coaching with Tottenham. Most remember that tenure with his side being up 3-0 to Manchester United at home only to lose 5-3. Last coached Wolverhampton in 2006 where he took them nowhere.

Kevin Keegan – After a couple of years away now coaching Newcastle again.

Sven Goran Eriksson - Now coaching at Manchester City. To early to form an opinion either way.

We have three coaches unemployed, another one who would of remained out of the game if Newcastle didn’t decide to hire based on nostalgia. Then there is Sven. The one thing in common is that they returned to England after coaching the national team.

Don’t take a job in England you will just be doomed to fail again. The only jobs that would be open to you are jobs that you will have to fight for survival year in and year out. That is the best case scenario, you may manage a team in the Championship where its one bad year and your fired. Once you are fired from a lower league club your next job will be on TV and not on a football field.

For your sake move as far away from England as you can. Beat down the doors at other European clubs for example Benfica in Portugal. They need a coach, you are a coach, its perfect. Benfica plays in the Champions league, if you can achieve any success with them you will come along way in gaining some respect back. There is more to football then the British based game. Anyone who was Sir Alex Ferguson number two has to know a thing or two about the game. Apply that knowledge and adapt to other forms of Football since you will always be black balled from getting a top job in England. It’s hard enough for an English manager to get a job with any of the top four teams, it’s impossible when an entire country blames you for its failure to play in Euro 2008.

In closing to quote Simon and Garfunkel again

We’d like to know a little bit about your for our files
We’d like to help you learn to help yourself.
Look around you all you see are sympathetic eyes,
Stroll around the grounds until you feel at home.

If you need anymore advice you know where to find me. I’m sure it couldn’t be any worst then the advice you got from Terry Venables.

Ronaldo: I Want To Play Football Again

Crocked Milan star Ronaldo has expressed his determination to play football again, and he says he also want to return in order to pay back a debt to the Rossoneri.

http://goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=641327

Hope he makes a full recovery. If he returns to A.C Milan he would be a good mentor to current Brazilian striker Pato.

Roma captain Totti ruled out of Man Utd clash

Roma captain Francesco Totti has been ruled out of their first-leg Champions League quarterfinals clash with Manchester United.

http://tribalfootball.com/article.php?id=85525

Manchester United better not take there foot of the gas. Even without Totti, Roma still have a dangerous team. A team that is also used to playing without there best player for long stretches.

England Better Than Italy – Nicholas

Former Arsenal forward Charlie Nicholas has stirred up the tension ahead of tomorrow’s Champions League clash between Roma and Manchester United by claiming that England have more individual talent than Italy, while he also says that Steven Gerrard is a far better player than Francesco Totti.

http://goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=641300

Former Arsenal forward Charlie Nicholas is a moron. A team whose players are out of Euro 2008 should not be held in higher regarded to a team who won the World Cup. Francesco Totti made his penalty kicks, Steven Gerrard looked like a scared little boy in missing his.

Galliani Goes On A Ref Rant

Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani turned the heat on the referee after the team’s disappointing home defeat to Atalanta.

http://goal.com/en/articolo.aspx?contenutoid=640933

This is the same referee who handed A.C Milan a last minute penalty kick. I’m sure it was his fault too that Andrea Pirlo missed.

Boyd: Bhoys Won’t Fire Strachan

Former Celtic captain Tom Boyd believes the club will stick by manager Gordon Strachan despite the weekend defeat to Rangers

http://goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=641195

I know that losing to Rangers is a big deal but Strachan has done a great job at the club. Proven by leading Celtic to the final 16 in the Champions League the last two seasons. Celtic would be taking a step back if they hand Strachan the sack.

Best of Zico

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Since Monday’s are generally slow news day, I’ve decided that every Monday to add a new video clip. The clip below is the best of Brazilian maestro Zico.

With his Fenerbahçe side taking on Chelsea mid week in the Champions League I figured it would be a good time to look back on some clips of his career.

EPL Gossip for Monday March 31st

Portsmouth captain Sol Campbell is set to use a get-out clause in his contract to join Villarreal in the summer. (Daily Mirror)

Villarreal are on pace to play in the Champions League. Can’t blame Campbell for waiting one last chance to play at an elite level.

Harry Redknapp is already lining up a replacement with a £5m move for 25-year-old Ghana international Jon Mensah, currently with Rennes, in the offing. (Various)

At 10 million dollars a team like Portsmouth can ill afford to make mistakes on the transfer market. Redknapp transfer record it must be said has been strong, which there place in the standings confirm.

Spurs boss Juande Ramos has threatened to wield the axe following his team’s woeful collapse against Newcastle. (Daily Mirror)

He has been threatening that for awhile now. It doesn’t appear his players get the message.

Brazilian Gilberto looks set to stay with Arsenal after passing his UK citizenship test, and is expected to apply for a British passport within a year. (Daily Star)

If Gilberto stays at Arsenal his ego better get use to playing in a supporting role.

Quick EPL Thoughts

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

- Liverpool with a professional win. Got the goal and got the result. They looked comfortable the entire game.

- There isn’t another striker in the world I’d take right now to score from within 10 yards then Fernando Torres. He is in deadly form in front of the net.

- Chelsea got the result. A sign of a good team is getting the points even in a bad game. Credit must be given to Middlesbrough on there performance however.

- What a turn around for Newcastle. Huge difference two weeks make.

- What a let down for Spurs fans. One never knows which team will show up. Losing 4-1 at home is inexcusable.

- While not EPL related, sad to hear about the Parma fan who got run over and passed away today.

Cup hopefuls Chivas, FCD set to meet

Western Conference powers both have MLS Cup aspirations

http://web.mlsnet.com/news/mls_news.jsp?ymd=20080327&content_id=145726&vkey=news_mls&fext=.jsp

Should be an interesting match up between two of the better teams in the MLS. FC Dallas major signing in the off season Duilio Davino will more then likely have to sit this one out. Chivas returns most of its core players from last year which should be enough to take this game.

Sinnacle Prediction Chivas USA 1-0

San Jose acquires Cunliffe, sends Pozniak to Chivas

The San Jose Earthquakes acquired forward John Cunliffe from Chivas USA in exchange for midfielder Chris Pozniak on Friday.

http://sports.si.cnn.com/default.asp?c=cnnsi&page=/soc-mls/news/AHN4141287.htm

Pozniak is bouncing around from team to team in the last year. Useful player as he can play many different positions on the pitch.

Sinnacle Soccer Sunday

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

Early morning action sees Chelsea trying to keep up with league leaders Manchester United taking on Middlesbrough. Boro have played the big four teams tough this year with a win against Liverpool and Arsenal. Chelsea better not look ahead to there mid week Champions League match or else all the positives from beating Arsenal will quickly disappear.

In the overlooked game of the day Kevin Keegan will try to build on last weeks win as they take on a Tottenham team whose players seem to be playing for roster spots next season.

The main event of the day however has to be the Merseyside derby between bitter rivals Everton and Liverpool. No Javier Mascherano, whose mouth got him suspended for this game and Everton will be without Tim Cahill who is done for the rest of the season with a foot injury. Few times has so much been at stake since Liverpool can all but wrap up 4th spot and a Champions league spot with a win but if Everton take the points it could go down to the wire.

Looking at the action in Spain the focus will be on Real Madrid vs Sevilla. In the first meeting Sevilla handled Madrid at home winning 2-0 but now Madrid can inch towards achieving back to back La Liga title with a win here.

In Serie A current Juventus coach Claudio Ranieri takes on former club Parma. These teams are going in opposite directions. Juventus after there big win last week vs Inter Milan have all but locked up a Champions League spot. Parma on the other hand will have to fight tooth and nail the rest of the way to stay in the league.

Speaking on the Champions League the 4th place battle rages on as A.C Milan take on Atalanta and current holders of the 4th spot Fiorentina travel to take on Udinese.

Puyol: The Story Of Our Season

Barcelona captain Carles Puyol lashed out at his team’s collapse against Real Betis on Saturday.

http://goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=640090

Barcelona need to take a good hard look at themselves after theat loss to Betis. Champions simply do not drop points like that.

Barcelona coach Rijkaard: I’m ashamed, very depressed

Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard admits he was “ashamed” after last night’s 3-2 defeat by Real Betis.

http://www.tribalfootball.com/article.php?id=85441

A cynic would think that the coach cares more then any of his players. Rijkaard is a class coach, it’s the players that need changing this summer not the coach.

Sevilla Eye Saviola Return

Sevilla are weighing up making a summer move to take Javier Saviola back to the club and may make an informal enquiry about the striker on Sunday evening at the Bernabéu.

http://goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=640194

If Sevilla are resigned to losing Luís Fabiano and/or Frédéric Kanouté come the off season Saviola would be an ideal replacement.

Kaka admits: AC Milan struggling for motivation

AC Milan ace Kaka has revealed the dressing room are finding it difficult to motivate themselves in their battle to clinch fourth-place.

A.C Milian are showing there character if they can’t manage to find it in them to fight for 4th place and a Champions League spot next year.

Juventus Plot Amauri Part-Exchange?

The transfer rumours surrounding Palermo star Amauri show no sign of letting up, with the latest story from the Italian media concerning a possible players-plus-cash deal from Juventus…

http://www.goal.com/en/articolo.aspx?contenutoid=640138

Amauri is a good player but not worth the 25 million that he is being shopped around for. If Palermo can get cash and the three players being mentioned (Paolo De Ceglie, Sebastian Giovinco and Domenico Criscito.) send Amauri on the first flight to Turin. Giovinco and Criscito in particular are bright young talents.

Mourinho: I Haven’t Met Moratti, I Don’t Want To

Nipping rumours of a move to Inter next season in the bud, Jose Mourinho has insisted that there have been no meeting with Massimo Moratti. What is more, he says he has no intention of meeting the Inter president in the future…

http://www.goal.com/en/articolo.aspx?contenutoid=639917

The above is just some showmanship on Mourinho’s part. He’d be a fool not to listen to Inter Milan and Mourinho is no fool.

EPL Gossip for Sunday March 30th

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho will make Frank Lampard his number one target if he takes over at Inter Milan. (Sunday Express)

Inter does lack an attacking center midfielder. Lampard will never get the money he is looking for from Chelsea. He will either bite his tongue and sign the extension Chelsea offer him or move on come the summer time. A new challenge would do Lampard some good.

Spurs will let Paul Robinson leave White Hart Lane for £2m in the summer, with Middlesbrough and Aston Villa believed to be interested in the England keeper. (The People)

That is pretty cheap for a goalie of Robinson class. He would improve both Middlesbrough and Villa. If it came down between the two there is a good chance brough would lose out.

The Magpies will be busy in the summer as they are also targeting Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon and former Arsenal wideman, Jose Antonio Reyes. (The People)

The Reyes rumor has already been touched upon. While not a big fan of Lennon’s form this year the talent is there and Newcastle should make a play if Tottenham are interested in selling.

Liverpool could move for Schalke’s Brazilian full-back Rafinha in the summer, while Reds boss Rafael Benitez has also been linked with two young players from South America. (Mail on Sunday)

While a fan of Rafinha, being a 5′7 right back will be an issue early on since he’ll have to adapt to the more physical English game.

Blackburn Rovers boss Mark Hughes is ready to take on Everton in a £4.5m battle for Heerenveen’s America midfielder Michael Bradley. (The People)

17 goals playing midfield will make you a poplar player. Bradley’s game is perfectly suited for the EPL.

Scott Carson is preparing for a return to Anfield after Aston Villa told the goalkeeper’s representatives that they would not meet Liverpool’s £9m asking price. (News of the World)

I wouldn’t pay nine million either. Craig Gordan cost Sunderland nine million and he is a much better goalie then Carson.

Uefa president Michel Platini says he will stop Premier League clubs from buying 16-year-old footballers from abroad. “The first football contract a player signs should be for the club who train him,” said Platini. (Mail on Sunday)

Somewhere Arsene Wenger is swearing.
